Engine Rattles at Cold Start-Up

SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS
At cold start-up, the engine rattles loudly for about 2 NOTE: If you’re reading this service bulletin on ISIS
seconds. and your computer has sound, click on the picture to
hear an example of the engine rattle.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The VTC (variable timing control) actuator is faulty.

2008 Accord L4 2/4-Door – ALL
2009 Accord L4 2-Door –
From VIN 1HGCS1...9A000001 thru
1HGCS1...9A004953
2009 Accord L4 4-Door –
From VIN 1HGCP2...9A000001 thru 1. Allow the oil to drain from the VTC system by not
1HGCP2...9A029528 starting the engine for at least 6 hours.
From VIN JHMCP2...9C000001 thru 2. Start the cold engine, and immediately listen for a
JHMCP2...9C010096 loud rattle:
Do you hear a loud rattle that lasts about 2
CORRECTIVE ACTION seconds?
Replace the VTC actuator. Yes - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
No -
• If you hear a different noise, continue with

normal troubleshooting.
VTC Actuator: P/N 14310-R44-A01, H/C 8665374
• If you don’t hear an abnormal noise, get more
VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve O-Ring: information from the customer and, if needed,
P/N 15832-RAA-A01, H/C 7131873 continue with normal troubleshooting.
Chain Case O-Ring:
P/N 91302-PNA-004, H/C 6753560 REPAIR PROCEDURE
Replace the VTC actuator:
REQUIRED MATERIALS • Refer to pages 6-30 and 6-31 of the 2008–2009
Hondabond HT Liquid Silicone Gasket Accord Service Manual, or
P/N 08718-0004, H/C 8263386 • Online, enter keywords VTC ACT, and select the
(One tube repairs two vehicles.) appropriate engine’s VTC Actuator, Exhaust
Camshaft Shaft Sprocket Replacement from the
list.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
Operation Number: 110153 NOTE: Because a new VTC actuator comes in its
unlocked position, you don’t need to do step 3 of the
Flat Rate Time: 4.0 hours
VTC actuator replacement procedure, unless the VTC
Failed Part: P/N 14310-R44-A01 actuator locks during handling. A VTC actuator must be
H/C 8665374 installed in its unlocked position to avoid damaging its
Defect Code: 03214 internal locking pin.
