III. SPEAKING PRACTICE

1. Do you have any hobbies?

[Date] 24
ENGLISH MS HANG – 0984794301

Well, to be quite honest I think I have a wide range of interests in quite a wide range
of activities such as: swimming, listening to music, reading books, watching movies and things
like that.

2. What do you do in your free time?

Well, in my spare time, I frequently take part in playing sports in the park with my friends.
Recently, I’ve taken up swimming. You probably know that swimming is one of the healthiest
sports because it strengthens all of the muscles equally. In addition to this I really get into the
feeling that I can float as free as a fish when I’m in the water.

3. What hobbies / free-time activities are popular in your country?

Well, there is certainly a wide variety of hobbies in my country. Though I think the most
popular would be traveling. And the explanation for this could be that people can take it
easy (relax) after a long hard working week. Furthermore, it’s a good time for all family
members to see and visit new places together. Other common hobbies would be music or
sport. And the main characteristic of these is that both music and sport help people
to unwind (nghỉ ngơi) after a busy day. Additionally, there are many-others, such as reading
and, playing board games but they are not as widely enjoyed as the first three I mentioned.

4. Is it important to have a hobby?

Well, actually, I guess that in many ways it is very important; especially when you consider that
a hobby can allow people to use their leisure time constructively for developing a talent. But
you also have to understand that some people have low salaries, so they work not only in the
daytime but also in the evening or at night. Therefore, these people have no time or money to
pursue hobbies. All in all (everything considered – sau khi cân nhắc hết mọi thứ), I guess my
answer would be yes for most people but no for some.

5. Why is it important for people to have free time activities?

Well, first of all, it is a very good way for people to let off steam (allow anger or frustration to
evaporate) and relieve stress by taking it easy after a hard working week. Free time activities
refresh them and make them more energetic. Another important reason is that taking part in
group games provides them valuable chances to socialize and improve their relationships. In
addition to this, if people play sports they will become healthier and more resistant to
diseases (kháng bệnh).

6. Is it harmful to spend too much time on a hobby?

[Date] 25
ENGLISH MS HANG – 0984794301

Honestly, I guess that in many ways it can be pretty (quite) harmful because of negative
impacts (ảnh hưởng tiêu cực) to their work, study and personal relationships. But we should
also understand that in some cases, it may be good for older people to idle away their
hours (spend time) on a favorite hobby. Considering everything (all in all), my answer would
have to be yes for most people, but no for some.

7. What free-time activities would you like to try in the future?

Well to be honest, I would say that I would really like to try windsurfing in the future. I guess
the reason why is that it is an exciting, adventurous (phiêu lưu) sport. In addition to this, I
would really love to go surfing (luot song) and master (lam chu) the natural power of the ocean.

LESSON 8 – RELATIONSHIPS - SPEAKING & WRITING PRACTICE

I. SPEAKING
1.1. IELTS SPEAKING TEST FORMAT

[Date] 37
ENGLISH MS HANG – 0984794301

Part 1-style questions

Examiner: Do you see your friends very often?

Louisa: Yes … we meet up most weekends … we all get on really well and have a lot in
common so we’re always happy doing the same things and going to the same places.

Examiner: What do you like about your close friends?

Anna: I think we enjoy each other’s company … we see eye-to-eye on most things so we
rarely fall out with each other.

Examiner: Have you known each other long?

Amy: Most of them yes … although my closest friend Carrie … we struck up a relationship at
college and got on like a house on fire … but yes … my other friendships go back years to when
we were at school.

Part 2-style task

Describe a person you are very close to. You should say:

 who this person is

 when you met them
 where you met them

and say what it is about them you like so much.

Reiko: I’d like to talk about my boyfriend … Jose … we got to know each other at University
almost 4 years ago … we were in the same department … initially we were just good
friends and used to go out in a group with our other friends … when Jose went back to Spain for
the holidays we would keep in touch with each other … then one year he invited me to come to
Spain with him … and that’s when we fell for each other I think … so you couldn’t really say it
was love at first sight as it had been over a year since we’d met … but we really hit it off and by
the time we got back to university in September we were able to tell all our friends that we
were in a relationship… what do I like about Jose … well he’s very kind … very funny … and very
supportive … and we’re really well matched in our interests … he hasn’t popped the
question yet though … we’ve talked about getting married and I think we’re both ready to
settle down and have children … we’ll just have to wait and see …

Part 3-style questions

Examiner: Do you think marriage is still as important as ever?

Cristine: Yes … it certainly is in my country … I think the problem for some people is a lack of
commitment … all relationships have their ups and downs …. but some people prefer to break
up rather than working at the relationship.

[Date] 38
ENGLISH MS HANG – 0984794301

Examiner: What do you think is the ideal time to get married?

Terry: Personally … I think you should wait until you’ve found yourself first … decided if you
want a career … perhaps do some travelling … you should do this before tying the knot …
although if you fall head over heels in love plans like these can easily be forgotten.

Examiner: Is it important to keep in contact with our friends when we’re in a relationship?
Maria: Absolutely … it’s so easy to drift apart from your friends when you fall in love … but I
think both partners should try not to lose touch with their friends … that’s the best way to
have a healthy relationship with your partner.

Sample answer:
In many regions of the world, women have achieved a social status which is on a par with that
of men. Definitely, the credit for this progress goes to their sincere efforts in acquiring the
highest educational qualifications and professional skills. Nevertheless, females continue to
experience gender discrimination and lack of promotion in workplaces.
Some experts may argue that this issue is never likely to be solved as men’s feeling of being
superior than women will always prevail in society. Therefore, this problem can only be
minimized and never completely erased. But, in my view, we just have not worked and
analyzed the problem enough to claim defeat.
A possible approach would be for the government to compel organizations to follow two rules.
Firstly, equal salaries must be paid to all employees for equivalent work. Secondly, the
percentage of promoted employees should be equal for both genders. At the same time,
regular checkups should be conducted on all tax paying companies to ensure that the measures
are strictly followed. This approach appears quite promising. However, the problem is that it
would take too long to execute. It can also be seen as an overly excessive measure. Not to
mention that big companies could easily fake the data.
A more feasible approach would be for the governments to take the lead and ensure that no
discrimination takes place on any of its own grounds. In all government organizations, women
must be treated properly and their work must be recognized accordingly. This policy would be
more realistic as it would enable the government to grab the problem by is roots instead of
trying to yank its stem out along with the roots. In addition, these steps would establish equal
payment as an unspoken norm. They would also make the government an ideal role model for
other private companies. In fact, countries such as Sweden and Iceland have proven the
effectiveness of such measures.
To sum up, it is most likely true that the situation will improve with time but that should not
stop us from putting a little more effort so as to solve it quickly or put it to rest once and for all.

The fast pace of modern life brought in its wake the advent of convenience food. Unlike fast food,
it saves the cooking time with posing much risk to our health. Therefore, it is said that the
popularity of convenience food will eventually wipe out the traditional food and traditional
cooking method. However, from my standpoint, this assumption cannot hold water.

The most convincing reason is that there a still a considerable group of people who stick to the
traditional cuisine and cooking method. For those who regard cooking as a hobby, convenience
food deprive them of the pleasure in the cooking process. Besides the hardcore cooking likers,
convenience food is not that popular among housewives and retired people who have enough
time to prepare for meals. Therefore, convenience food is only prevalent among the white collars
who do not have time to cook and even for them I reckon they would prefer a decent meal
whenever possible.

Another conspicuous reason why traditional cooking method would persist is that cooking and
eating traditional food is an indispensable interpersonal social activity. During festivals, be it the
Christmas Day in western or the Mid-autumn festival in China, taking time to prepare for a feast
and dining together is a traditional custom to enhance the family bond. What’s more, quite a lot
business trisections re negotiated during dinner or lunch and surely those entrepreneurs would
not chose to invite their important trading partners for convenience food.

Certainly, the merits of convenience food is undeniable. It bypasses the routine process of
cooking and we can enjoy our food by a simple press of the microwave button. Convenience food

caters for the need of the white collars who are always chasing after the clock. However, the
traditional food and cooking method form in history and passed on from generation to
generation would not be replaced easily.

To conclude, despite the benefit brought by convenience food, traditional food would not
disappear in the near future since traditional cooking method and food is still the norm in many
families and it has become an indispensable way to interact with people.

The rising problem of obesity has helped to make diabetes treatments the biggest drug bill in
primary care, with almost £600 million of medicines prescribed by doctors last year, according to
the NHS Information Centre.
Analysts said that young people contracting the condition, which is often associated with
obesity, were helping to push up costs as doctors tried to improve their long-term control of the
disease and prevent complications.
A total of 32.9 million diabetes drugs, costing £599.3 million, were prescribed in the past financial
year. In 2004-05 there were 24.8 million, costing £458 million. More than 90 per cent of the 2.4
million diabetics in England have type 2 diabetes, with the remainder suffering from type 1, the
insulin-dependent form of the disease. There are thought to be 500,000 undiagnosed cases of
diabetes. -
While rates of type 1 have shown slight increases in recent years, type 2 has risen far more
rapidly - a trend linked to the increasing number of people who are overweight or obese. Almost
one in four adults in England is obese, with predictions that nine in ten will be overweight or
obese by 2050. Obesitycosts the NHS £4.2 billion annually. This year the Government started a
£375 million campaign aimed at preventing people from becoming overweight by encouraging
them to eat better and exercise more.
An NHS Information Centre spokeswoman who worked on the report, which was published
yesterday, said that diabetes was dominating the primary care drug bill as better monitoring
identified more sufferers and widely used medications for other conditions such as statins
became cheaper. She said that the data suggested a growing use of injectable insulin in type 2
diabetes care, which was helping to push up costs.
Doctors agreed that more expensive long-acting insulin, which can cost about £30 per item, was
being used more often, as well as more expensive pills and other agents.
The report, an update of the centre's June publication Prescribing for Diabetes in England, shows
that the number of insulin items prescribed last year rose by 300,000 to 5.5 million, at a total
cost of £288.3 million. It marked an 8 per cent rise on the £26 7 million spent in the previous
year. However, while the number of anti-diabetic drugs, which are mostly in tablet form, also
rose, the cost dropped slightly to £168.1 million.
'Type 2 is increasing. We are seeing it in younger people, and because it is a progressive disease,
people are needing an increasing number of interventions as time goes by,' the spokeswoman
said, adding that long-acting insulins such as Glargine were now common. 'For people who are
struggling to control their type 2 diabetes it makes sense, but it is quite a big clinical change
from five or ten years ago.'
Other anti-diabetic items, such as use of the subcutaneous injection exenatide, have also
increased and cost £14.3 million. Laurence Buckman, chairman of the British Medical
Association's general practice committee, said that he had observed a trend with drugs such as
exenatide, which costs £80 per item. He said that younger patients could start on cheaper tablets

[Date] 59

such as metformin, which costs £3.70 per box, but were needing increasingly sophisticated
treatments to keep their condition in check

Part 2

Describe a time when you were ill. You should say:

o when this was
o what your symptoms were
o how long the illness lasted
and say how it affected your life at the time
I will talk about a terrible experience when I got ill. It happened a few months ago when I
had flu coupled with sore throat. A week before it happened, I was so stressed with work. I had
stayed late nights in the office to meet several deadlines. I lack sleep and I couldn’t also eat on
time.
My body started to feel weak; I started to have slight fever and colds. I knew it was going to be
bad because I was having headaches, and severe muscle and body aches. I also started to have
dry cough and my throat hurts.
It lasted for about a week. I went to see a doctor so I can get the right prescription. I was
advised to have bed rest for a few days.
I was not able to report for work for a week. Luckily, I have already finished all my deadlines
before it happened. But, it had still affected my life because I failed to do my daily routine. I
also asked my mom to take care of me since I lived alone. When I came back to work, there’s a
huge pile of paper work waiting on my desk.

Part 3

1. What is the role of the government in promoting healthcare

I believe that the government plays a major role in promoting healthcare. The government
should educate the people about health and guide them about having healthy lifestyles. It
must create more programs and activities that would disseminate appropriate and accurate
information about health. I also believe that the government should improve the health sector
to make it more accessible for the people. .

2. What more do you think could be done to promote healthy living in your country?

I think that the government should have more initiatives andimplement strict policies when it
comes to activities that affect people’s health. For example, the banning of smoking in public

[Date] 61
ENGLISH MS HANG – 0984794301

places would not just benefit the smokers, but the none-smokers as well. People must also be
educated about the advantages of having a healthy lifestyle. I also think that putting up more
establishments for people to engage in sports or exercises must be encouraged.

3. How can individuals take more responsibility for their own health?

Lifestyle plays a major role in our health. We must care for our own health. There are a lot of
things we can do to stay fit and healthy. For example, being conscious about our food intake
and exercising regularly must be practiced. Discipline is very important. We must be always try
to avoid unhealthy practices and vices.

While it is true that there has been some path-breaking research in education, academic
achievements are still assessed using the old fashioned ‘pen and paper’ exams. Many people
believe that this is a flawed method. I don’t fully agree with them.
Paper based written examinations have their flaws. The biggest problem with the traditional
examinations is that they only assess the performance of the student on the day of the exam. As
a result a bright student who couldn’t prepare well for the exam due to reasons that were beyond
their control will get a poor grade. This is unfair. If the student performed well throughout the
year in class tests and other informal assessments, there is no justification for giving them a poor
grade just because they failed to perform well in one examination. Written examinations also
encourage mugging. Parents and teachers force students to learn answers by heart with the sole
objective of getting a good score. Many of these students don’t understand the concepts and yet
they get good marks. They won’t be able to answer the same questions if you ask them a few
days later. This kind of learning will benefit neither the student nor the society.
An alternative solution is to use a method of continuous evaluation. Schools should monitor the
performance of students from day one. They should also use a variety of parameters to
determine the merit of each student. Unfortunately, this method also has its flaws. In most cases,
teachers and schools try to manipulate the results with the objective of getting great results for
their school. Education is a highly competitive sector and every school wants to get better results
than other schools. So in this scenario if schools are entrusted with the task of grading their
students, we cannot expect the results to be impartial.
Perhaps a better solution is to use written examinations in tandem with continuous evaluation.
This will ensure that good students will get the grades they deserve even if they fail to perform
well on exam day.
To conclude, the traditional written examination has its flaws. Other methods have their flaws
too. In my opinion, the government and the schools should use a variety of methods and
parameters to assess the calibre of their students.

Model answer:

As the world becomes more integrated, the need for common means of communication is
becoming more pressing. Inevitably, speakers of minority languages have been under pressure
to speak the languages of more dominant groups, both locally and globally. Some people argue
that there is nothing that can or should be done to stop this process. I would suggest that the
issue merits more careful consideration.

It is true as the balance of power among group of people throughout history has shifted,
languages have arisen, changed, and died out. Even once widely-spoken languages, such as Latin,
have disappeared. To some extent, therefore, this process may be inevitable. However, there are
examples of communities that have managed to preserve and even revive languages under
threat. Irish and Scots Gaelic, for example, have been preserved by government policy on
education and broadcast media.

There are, indeed, several benefits to preserving minority languages. Retaining the language of a
community often means that other forms of culture are maintained: songs, literature and local
traditions. These all contribute to the richness and variety of human culture. Moreover, language
helps communities to remain cohesive and to have a strong sense of identity. This can help
people to be strong in adversity. Where this sense of identity and cohesion has been lost, for
example among many indigenous communities in North America, problems can follow: low self-
esteem, lack of confidence and loss of initiative.

In short, it is possible and in many cases, desirable, to make the effort to preserve minority
languages. This can have benefits both for the minority speech community and for society as a
whole in terms of cultural richness.

Model answer:
New technologies, in particular the Internet has changed the world we live in. Undoubtedly, these
advances plays a prominent role in global trade and commerce. It has modified and transformed
the lives of consumer. Many people believe that traditional way of doing business will still
dominate. However, others believe that technology will continue to play a major role in trade. In
this essay both the sides will be analysed.
Without a doubt it can be said that shopping on the Internet is very convenient. Almost all the
sites provide quick, easy and hassle free shopping experience and free delivery of products. In
addition to that, they provide lot of different payment options like cash on delivery and net
banking. Moreover discounts and promotions offer variety of choice to shoppers. For example,
companies like Snapdeal and Amazon regularly advertise about their new deals. In fact, this ease
of buying and selling is proof that day by day increasing number of people are purchasing online
and such companies are growing strengths to strengths.
On the other hand, many people are skeptical about the trade on the Internet. Firstly, because
its reach is limited to the people who are literate and have access to electronic gadgets. Secondly
many people like to purchase after thoroughly verifying the product. The prefer to have look and
feel and evaluate quality of product. For instance, clothes and shoes are generally purchased
from traditional brick and mortar shops where a trial can be taken. Therefore it is difficult to
refute the theory that with new advancement traditional commerce will phase out.

To summarize, it is evident that with widespread use of the Internet consumer behavior has
changed over the years. Although everything can be purchased online, people will prefer to check
product physically. May be in years to come new cutting edge technologies will bring more
changes in the way commerce is conducted.

The recession has brought about an abrupt change of mood on university campuses up and
down the country. A five-year boom in the graduate job market has been stopped in its tracks
and salary expectations, which hit record levels last year, are heading southwards. No wonder
only one in five of 1 6,000 final year students questioned for a recent survey by High Flyers
Research said that they expected to get a job for which they are qualified by the time they
graduate this summer.

Despite the gloom, the financial case for going to university remains compelling. International

surveys continue to show the salary premium enjoyed by UK graduates over those who choose

not to go to university as among the highest in the world. In the post-recession world, a
university degree is likely to be even more of an advantage to job-seekers than before. But
choosing the right degree course and the right university will also be more important than

ever. This does not necessarily mean that students should go only for job-related degrees, but it

will put a premium on marketable skills. And it may mean that more universities can be
expected to follow the lead of Liverpool John Moores University, which puts all of its

[Date] 13

undergraduates through a World of Work (WoW) course designed to give them the problem-
solving and communications skills they will need at work.

The Times Good University Guide 2010, published by HarperCollins, offers a wealth of essential

information to help candidates to navigate the maze of university choice, as well as advice on

student life. It is the most authoritative guide to universities in the UK and is an essential and

comprehensive tool for students and parents. The online version of the Guide allows students
and parents to create their own individual university rankings and to compare the strengths
and weaknesses of different institutions by sorting universities according to one of eight criteria
- from student satisfaction to research quality and degree results.

The table sees Oxford maintain its leadership, despite coming below Cambridge in most of the

subject tables. Cambridge has the better record on student satisfaction, research, entry
standards, completion and graduate destinations, but Oxford's lead in staffing levels, degree
classifications and particularly in spending on libraries and other student facilities makes the
difference.

The biggest climbers at the top of the table include Liverpool (up from 43 to 28), Leeds (up from
31 to 27), Sheffield (up from 22 to 18), Edinburgh (up from 18 to 14) and Exeter (up from 13 to
nine). St Andrews remains the top university in Scotland, while Cardiff is well clear in Wales.

The key information is contained in the 62 subject tables, which now cover every area of higher

education. The number of institutions in this year's tables has increased by only one because a
fourth university - the West of Scotland - has instructed the Higher Education Statistics Agency
not to release its data. It joins Swansea Metropolitan, London Metropolitan and Liverpool Hope
universities in blocking the release of data to avoid appearing in league tables.

Model answer
Presently, finance regulation is one of the major parts of matures' lives. Therefore, every adult
person may need to know how to control his or her capital. There are, probably, two most

[Date] 14
8
ENGLISH MS HANG – 0984794301

popular methods of studying money management, namely, attending specialized courses and
installing particular software.

First way of learning how to run finances is to enroll on specialized courses. While attending
such classes, people obtain detailed information about the subject due to the fact that lessons
are normally conducted by professionals. In addition, learners can ask any question related to
managing property during lessons and receive justified answers immediately. On the other
hand, it can be expensive to pay for the course, especially for those who attend the classes in
order to save money. Consequently, if people go to such courses they may conversely
overspend their finances.

Another approach to the problem of learning how to control capitals is installing special
software. Certain applications can calculate people's income, expenses on necessary products,
taxes and entertainment. The most considerable benefit of this method is that learning by
applications is faster because people do not have to compute figures ; the application
accomplishes such procedures instead of humans. Furthermore, studying using software is
much cheaper than , for instance, taking special courses because everything they have to pay
for is the downloading of the application. However, this way can be unreliable owing to the fact
that errors may occur in any software sometimes. Additionally, a phone with the software can
be stolen , which might lead to the disclosure of the data.

To sum up, there are a number of practicable mechanisms of learning how to operate finances,
even though each of them has both merits and demerits. Thus, there is probably no such way of
learning money management that could be ideal for all people.
