PETITION LETTER: DRUGS AND DRUG ABUSE

From: Rachel L. Valenzuela

Purol 6, Brgy. Magang,

To: Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte

Malacañang Palace, JP, Kalayaan Hall,

Dear Pres. Duterte,

We are now in the year 2021. This probably means that by year 2022, there will be a newly
elected President of the Philippines. I am writing this letter to you to state my concerns about
your promise six years ago to all Filipino people. Do you still remember that promise, Mr.
President? Do you still remember the time when you tell the Filipinos that within 6 months there
will be no more illegal drugs in the Philippines? I know that your statement is too good to be true
but what actually concerns me is the fact that your War on Drugs campaign causes a lot of killings
in the Philippines. To be honest, it is fine for me if you want to punished those people like drug
dealers, drug sindicates or even the drug lords but the worst thing about your campaign is that
even innocent people were killed. I also notice that most of the people that are being killed were
from impoverished communities and only few drug lords were caught well in fact they are the
one who used poor people in their illegal drug businesses.
In this letter, my petition Mr. President is for you to stop the war on drugs already. I think
before making a campaign like this, you should fix first the justice system of our country. Due to
our biased, corrupt and slow justice system, lots of innocent people that were killed during your
bloody campaign were unable to achieve the justice they deserve. Another thing that you should
focus on before conducting projects like this is to improve police investigation to avoid affecting
the lives of innocent citizens. Police should realized that they shouldn’t just killed people without
enough proof that they are indeed guilty on having illegal drugs. This is actually one of the reason
why your campaign on War on Drugs becomes unlawful because it can kills not just drug abusers
but even the innocent people that are just suspected for using illegal drugs.
I understand Mr. President that you want to illeminate drugs in this country but please if you
really want to continue your campaign against Illegal drugs and Drugs abuse, remember those
things that I tell you that you have to fix first to make your war on drugs project to be benificial
rather than destructive to our society. I’m hoping that you understand my petition very well.
That’s all Mr. President. I thank you for reading my letter.

ACTIVITY 2: STUDENT’S JOURNAL. Reflect on the importance of a person’s context and his/her
awareness of the various problems in society. What are the different problems in your community
today? How do these problems affect your daily life? How can these problems be addressed by an
ordinary student or a citizen?

Having an awareness to various problems in a society is very important for us to be able to

address it. We cannot solve a particular issue if we do not know what the problem is in the first
place. Knowing the things that going around us will help us to better understand what’s really
happening and how people like us can contribute meaningfully to solve the problems in the
society. We have many different problems in our community today. We have problems like
poverty, corruption, illegal drugs, and covid pandemic. These societal issues affect my daily life in
a sense that it affects the society where we live in. Because of poverty, I saw many people living
in the streets and it affects me emotionally seeing how hard their life is. Corruption also affect me
as a citizen of our country because some of the funds that must be given to us where being
corrupted by some officials. The use of illegal drugs of drug abusers also bring fear to people like
me because they are those people who are not in the right state of mind and can commit crime at
any moment. Out of all the societal problems we currently experiencing, the covid pandemic is
the one that affects me the most. It affects my usual routine, my education, and also my mental
health.
As an ordinary student and a citizen of our country, I can addressed these problems by being
part of the solution than being part of the problem. Well I know that issues like poverty and
corruption is something that I can’t solve in a snap but by using my power to vote wisely, I know
I can contribute to the improvement of our society. Also, obeying the law can also help our
community to maintain discipline. Education as well is a huge factor to solve many societal issues
in the community for it improve our wisdom and turn us into better and contributing citizens of
our country.
