AGE

1. Mr. Karlo and his student, Kleo’s current age is now 175 greater than the product of
their age 5 years ago. If Mr. Karlo is 20 years older than Kleo, how old are they?

Solution:
 Let Mr. Karlo’s age = x
 Let Kleo’s age = y
(x)(y) = 175 + (x – 5)(x + 5)
Let us substitute x, which is Mr. Karlo’s age
(y + 20)(y) = 175 + (y + 20 – 5)(y – 5)
y2 + 20y = 175 + (y + 15)(y – 5)
y2 + 20y = 175 + y2 + 10y – 75
-y2 – 10y -y2 – 10y
10 y 100
=
10 10
y = 10
Kleo’s age is 10.
Mr. Karlo is 20 years older. Therefore, x = y + 20
x = y + 20
x = 10 + 20 = 30
x = 30
Mr. Karlo is 30 years old.
Mr. Karlo is 30 years old, while Kleo is 10 years old.
AREA
2. Barangay Marasigan has been affected by a flood. The perimeter of the affected area
is 180 meters, while the area is 2000 m2. Find the width and length of the affected
area.

Let "x" and "y" be the length and width of the rectangular field respectively

Perimeter: 180 m. Then, we have 2x + 2y = 180

Divide both sides by 2. = x + y = 90

Subtract x from both sides. y = 90 - x

Area = 2000 m2

= (length) (width) = 2000

(x)(y) = 2000 ; insert y = 90 - x.

x (90 - x) = 2000

90x – x2 = 2000

x2 - 90x + 2000 = 0

(x - 50)(x - 40) = 0

x = 50 or x = 40

If x = 50,

y = 90 - 50

y = 40

If x = 40,

y = 90 - 40

y = 50

So, the length and width of the affected area are 40 m and 50 m respectively.
