2. Structure: Ever / never

 Ever:
used in questions to give emphasis on a person’s life experiences since the beginning until
the moment NOW.
Ex: Have you ever been to China? (meaning: at least once in your whole life)
Have you ever eaten Mexican food?
Have you ever jumped off an airplane?
 Never:
used in negative answers.
Ex: No, I have never been to China. / Or, I haven’t been to China.
No, I have never eaten Mexican food. / Or, I haven’t eaten Mexican food.
No, I have never jumped off an airplane. / Or, I haven’t jumped off an airplane.

NOTE: GONE OR BEEN?

 Been: used to refer to completed visits to a place.

Have you ever been to Budapest? No, I’ve never been there.
 Gone: used to refer that the visit is not complete, it is still in process.

Compare:

Joan’s just gone to the shop. She’ll be back in about ten Joan has not yet returned from
minutes. the shop.

Joan’s just been to the shop. She bought some cakes. Would
Joan has returned from the shop.
