INTRODUCTION

• Direct replacement for This presentation discusses the major design features of the D10R Track-
D10N
type Tractor, which is a direct replacement for the D10N. The D10R is an
elevated sprocket design tractor equipped with electronically controlled
clutch and brake steering.

• Standard features and Other standard features include: Advanced Modular Cooling System
attachments
(AMOCS) radiator, electronic clutch and brake steering, 3412E engine
with the Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injection (HEUI) fuel system,
Caterpillar Monitoring System, Control Throttle Shifting (CTS), and a
demand fan drive. The D10R can also be equipped with optional
attachments such as an engine pre-lubrication system, cold start package,
a fast fueling adapter, and dual tilt blade controls.

The 3412E turbocharged and aftercooled diesel engine is rated at 425 kW

(570 hp) at 1900 rpm and supplies power through a torque divider for
efficient power transfer when the tractor is not in a loaded condition and
maximum torque multiplication during heavy loading.

OPERATOR'S COMPARTMENT
• Fully adjustable seat
The fully adjustable Caterpillar Contour Series Seat provides proper
support, automotive comfort, and less operator fatigue. The operator can
• Optional air adjust the seat height, fore and aft positions, tilt, and seat back angle. The
suspension seat seat is angled 15° to the right to provide maximum visibility of implement
operation. An optional air suspension seat is available for the D10R.

• Finger Tip Control: All D10R tractors are equipped with a Power Train Electronic Control
System. The Finger Tip Control (FTC) is a part of this system. The two
1. Left steering and
small levers replace the traditional steering clutch and brake levers and
brake lever
allow the operator to control left and right turns. When one of these
2. Right steering and levers is pulled, an electrical signal is sent to the Electronic Control
brake lever
Module (ECM) for the FTC. The ECM then sends a signal to the steering
3. Forward/reverse and brake control valve. The proportional solenoids on this valve control
direction knob the hydraulic circuits for the steering clutch and brake spools. Pulling the
4. Transmission left steering lever (1) toward the rear of the tractor (approximately one-
upshift button half the full travel distance) releases the left steering clutch, which
5. Transmission disengages the track from the power train. Pulling the left steering lever
downshift button the full travel distance engages the left brake. The right steering lever (2)
operates the same as the left steering lever. To make a gradual turn, pull
the steering lever approximately one-half the travel distance to the rear of
the tractor, and to make a sharp turn, pull the steering lever the full travel
distance to the rear of the tractor.

The machine direction is controlled by a rotating knob (3) located on the

console. Rotating the knob toward the front of the tractor shifts the
tractor to the FORWARD direction. Rotating the knob downward the full
distance shifts the tractor to the REVERSE direction. The center position
of the knob is the NEUTRAL position.

Pushing the top button (4) upshifts the transmission to the next higher
gear. Pushing the bottom button (5) downshifts the transmission to the
next lower gear.

• Parking brake The parking brake switch (1) on the D10R is located on the right side of
controls: the Finger Tip Control console. The parking brake is electronically
controlled with a key lockout (2). When the parking brake is ENGAGED,
1. On/off switch
the ECM neutralizes the transmission and engages the right and left
2. Key lockout brakes. An indicator light on the Caterpillar Monitoring System
illuminates when the parking brake is ENGAGED.

• Console adjustments: The console can be adjusted for operator comfort. Located at the front
center of the FTC console are the up and down adjustments and the fore
1. Up/down switch
and aft adjustments. An electrical switch (1) allows the console to move
2. Fore/aft lever up or down, and a manual release lever (2) allows the console to be
adjusted fore or aft.

• Lever functions: The dozer control lever (1) is located at the right of the operator's seat.
The standard implement control lever allows the operator to control all
1. Dozer control lever
the blade functions from one lever. The dozer control valve on the D10R
contains spools with metering slots which reduce the lever effort for the
operator.

• Dozer lever positions Pushing the dozer control lever (1) to the forward detent position causes
the blade to FLOAT. Just to the rear of FLOAT is the blade LOWER
position. Pulling the lever to the rear of the center (HOLD) position
causes the blade to RAISE. Pushing the lever to the right tilts the right
side of the blade down, and pulling the dozer control lever to the left tilts
the left side of the blade down.

• Dual tilt option If the tractor is equipped with the optional dual tilt controls, the dozer
control lever also includes a toggle switch located at the top of the lever
and a trigger switch located at the front of the dozer control lever handle.
Engaging the trigger switch and moving the lever to the right of the center
(HOLD) position will cause the blade to tip forward for more blade
penetration, and engaging the trigger switch and moving the lever to the
• Trigger switch and left of the center (HOLD) position will cause the blade to tip rearward for
toggle switch
carrying greater loads. The toggle switch is used to select either the
single tilt or dual tilt mode. When the toggle switch is in the OFF
(rearward) position, the blade operates in the dual tilt mode. When the
toggle switch is in the ON (forward) position, the blade will function in
the single tilt mode.

2. Ripper control If the D10R is equipped with a ripper, the ripper control lever (2) is
lever located behind the dozer control lever. To RAISE the ripper, move the
control lever to the left of the center (HOLD) position, and to LOWER
the ripper, move the control lever to the right of the center (HOLD)
position. To move the ripper shank toward the tractor (IN), move the
control lever forward of the HOLD position, and to move the carriage
away from the tractor (OUT), move the control lever rearward of the
HOLD position.

3. High/low idle The high and low idle switch (3) is located below the dozer control lever.
switch Touching the top of the rocker switch allows the engine rpm to increase to
HIGH IDLE, and touching the bottom of the switch decreases the engine
rpm to LOW IDLE.

4. Pin puller switch An optional pin puller is available for tractors equipped with a single
shank ripper. The pin puller switch (4), which is located behind the ripper
control lever, DISENGAGES the pin when moved upward and to the
right and ENGAGES the pin when moved upward and to the left.

5. Master fault light A second master fault light (5) is located at the right rear of the operator's
compartment to alert the operator of a system that is operating out of its
normal range.

6. Implement control The D10R is equipped with implement control lever restraints (6). These
lever restraints restraints prevent inadvertent movement of the control lever.

7. Horn button The horn button (7) is located between the implement control lever and
the ripper control lever.

• Pedal locations: The D10R is equipped with two pedals located toward the lower front of
1. Service brake the operator's compartment. Service brake engagement is electronically
controlled and operates similarly to the steering and brake controls.
When the service brake pedal (1) is depressed, a signal is sent from the
brake pedal sensor to the ECM. A signal from the ECM is then sent to
the steering clutch and brake valve which engages the left and right
brakes.

2. Decelerator The smaller pedal to the right of the service brake pedal is the decelerator
pedal (2). Intermediate engine speeds are set in conjunction with this
pedal and the low/high idle switch located below the dozer control lever.
• Setting intermediate
To adjust the engine speed, depress the decelerator pedal to the desired
engine speeds
rpm setting and hold down the top of the low/high idle switch for
approximately five seconds. Then, release the switch prior to the
decelerator pedal to maintain the desired intermediate engine speed.

• Caterpillar Monitoring The instrument panel includes the Caterpillar Monitoring System display
System panel which monitors various tractor systems. The panel also includes the
individual system switches, action light, key start switch, action alarm
(not visible), odometer, and the gear/direction indicator.

• Switch functions In the upper left corner of the panel are six rocker-type switches which
control various machine functions. The first three switches activate the
machine lighting. The next switch allows scrolling through the digital
tachometer, odometer, service hourmeter, engine oil pressure, and
diagnostic codes. The fifth switch from the left provides auxiliary
electrical power. The final switch is used for manual ether injection to aid
in smoother engine running after a cold weather start.

INSTRUCTOR NOTE: The Caterpillar Monitoring System will be

discussed in more detail later in this presentation.
