LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET # 1
QUARTER 3: WEEK 1

Irrigation Materials,Tools and Equipment

LEARNING SKILLS FROM MELCs

A. Most Essential Learning Competency

LO1: Irrigation Materials, Tools, Equipment and Structures
B. Objective:
1.Identify the materials, tools, equipment and structures used in irrigation works
2.Describe the specific uses of each material, tool, and equipment in irrigation works.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Irrigation materials, tools, equipment and structures are those things needed to make
a functional irrigation system. In order to deliver the required amount of water to crops it is
important to know the different materials ,tools, and equipment used in irrigation works as
well as their uses.
The following are some of the irrigation materials:
1.Hoses and Pipes and Tapes
Hose is a flexible tube conveying water, used chiefly for watering plants while pipes
are tube of metal, plastic, or other material used to convey water or other fluid
substances.Tapes on the other hand are made out of plastic material and flat which expands
eventually into tube-like form as the water passes through it .
The pipes are the basic component of all irrigation networks. There are various kinds
and types available in many pressure ratings and in different sizes (diameters). The pipes in
use for farm-level irrigation systems are mainly in rigid PVC and polyethylene (PE). Quick
coupling light steel pipes and layflat hoses are used on a smaller scale. Threaded galvanized
steel pipes are of limited use.

2. Fittings- are materials used to connect sections of irrigation tubing. They come in a
variety of sizes, styles and materials.
a. Tee – has an inlet and an outlet and is shaped like the letter “T”

b. Elbow – used to connect pipes on corners. The angle of elbows may

vary.Reducer elbow variations also exist when piping diameters being connected are
different.

c. Coupling – is used to join two hoses, pipes or tapes of the same diameter and
type.

d. Wyes – are built in the shape of letter “Y”. They are similar to Tee fittings but the
smoother angling reduces friction and turbulence in the water.

e. Adaptor – connect pipes that are not the same type. Adaptor can be male or
female on one end, it can turn a pipe male or female.

f. Barb - connects hoses to pipes. It is usually male on one end the other end has a
barbed tube, which is a ridged or tapered cone.

g. Cross fitting - has openings on all four of its ends and can connect four pipes.

h.Nipple - A short fitting made of metals such as copper, brass or steel or chlorinated
polyvinyl chloride (CPVC). Instead of connecting two pipes a nipple connects two
fittings.

i.Plug and Cap - Plugs and caps are both used to close up pipe openings. The main
difference is that the plug is male and cap is female.

j. Union - have either male or female threads. They are similar to couplings but the
difference is unions are easy to remove making them convenient for maintenance

3. Filters- are irrigation materials used to eliminate debris from clogging pipes,
nozzles and damaging water pump impellers.

4. Valves -These are devices or natural object that regulates, directs or controls the flow of
fluids by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. There are different
types of valves the most common are foot valves, ball valves and gate valves.

5.Sealants and adhesives – are substances applied to one surface or both surfaces of
materials to be joined together and resist their separation. Adhesives in irrigation are
commonly used to join pipes made out of plastic materials. Sealants however are materials
that prevent the flow of fluids.

An irrigation tool is any type of tool or device that is used to design, maintain, and/or
repair irrigation systems. Irrigation tools are typically sold under several main categories,
including drip and underground irrigation tools, sprinklers, hoses, and irrigation timers.
Hand Tools
A hand tool is any tool that is powered by hand to make the work more efficient and
safe. These tools are used in manual operations . https://www.britannica.com/technology/hand-
tool : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_tool

The following are examples of hand tools used in irrigation:

trash, and moving soil from one place to
another.

FARM EQUIPMENT

1. Tractors – a farm equipment uses in various activities in the farm such as installation
of irrigation pipes, hoses and drip tapes.

3. Water Pump – is one of main invention used for water pumping purpose and can
assist in efficient irrigation like agriculture. It plays an important role in lifting the
water.
