Search Engine to Conduct a Guided Search on a Given Topic!

The World Wide Web ranges widely that you can search information that you
want to know. From knowing the formulas in Math, explaining the concepts
and theories of Science, exploring the history of the Philippines, and understanding
the basics of English and Filipino grammar, using the internet will be a great help
for a student like you.

A web search engine is a software system that allows an internet user to find
different topics, discussions, e-books, videos, and audios available in the world
wide web. Its main function is to collect, store, and order information systematically.

The following are the different examples of web search engine and its functions:

Google is the most used search engine to find general knowledge including
images, videos, news,books, maps, flights and finance available in the word wide web.
This search engine shows millions of results in just a click.

The most commonly used search engine is Google which can be available in
mobile phones, tablets, desktops, and laptops. The following are the steps to follow
as guide when using web search engines. For example, your task is to search about
Subject-Verb Agreement. If you have internet access, follow the steps below.

GUIDED SEARCH USING GOOGLE

1. Click your browser to open. Your browser can be Google, Internet Explorer, or
Microsoft Edge.
2. Type the link https://www.google.com in the address bar of your browser.
Then press “Enter” in your keyboard.

3. After pressing “Enter”, the homepage of Google will appear just like the
image below:

4. Type the keyword. Keyword is a word or group of words that you want to search
about. In this given task, you should search for “subject verb agreement”.

Note: While typing, there will be search suggestions like subject verb agreement rules,
subject verb agreement examples, subject worksheets, up to subject verb agreement
checker which are presented in the image. Search suggestion is an online engine
system predicting the word or group of words which help you identify the topic.

5. Click the keyword to show the search results. After clicking, thousands of results
from different websites will be shown. The images below show different search results.

Search Tip: Read the search results and the website sources. Determine if the
website is trusted. Then click the result which you think has the most trusted content
and website source.

Reminder: Not all that you see and read on the internet is always true and correct, so
always understand and analyze very carefully.

6. Click the search result you trusted the most. Among the search results,
grammarbook.com is the most trusted search result. By clicking the website, you will
see its content just like the image that follows.

If you want to search results which are content-specific, you can use filters.
Filters can be seen below the search bar which can be in the form of (a) images, (b)
videos, (c) books or (c) news.

Bing is a web search engine used for general knowledge including images,
videos, and news owned and operated by Microsoft. The official link of Bing is
https://www.bing.com/. The image that follows is a screenshot of searching new
science discoveries using Bing.

3. Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free
books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. This
web search engine prioritizes online books or e-books in
different subjects. The open library of Internet Archive
depends on browsing by subject in the form of Art,
Fantasy, Biographies, Science, Recipes, and Fictions.
The books can be downloaded in PDF or ePub. The official link of Internet Archive is
https://archive.org/. The image that follows is a screenshot of searching books using
Internet Archive.

Slideshare is a web search engine for PowerPoint presentations about wide
topics. PowerPoint is a software, packaged to make electronic presentations
consisting of a series of pages or slides. User of this search engine should sign up or
log in to download the PowerPoint presentation. The official link to access this engine
is https://www.slideshare.net/ .The image below is a screenshot of searching the topic

YouTube is a web search engine sharing different videos about different topics
related to education or entertainment. Nowadays, wide variety of contents were
uploaded by vloggers. A vlogger is a person who is creating and uploading blogs
through videos which can be about life experiences, tutorials, reviews, or discussions.
The official link to access this search engine is https://www.youtube.com/.The image
below is a screenshot of searching how to cook eggs in different ways using YouTube.

Importance of Web Search Engine

In the digital age, most people use search engine to answer their questions
instead of asking of someone. Web search engine creates possible answers to most
of the questions. In general, the following are the importance of web search engine:

1. Information Management- The world is full of information that a person cannot


remember all, with the help of web search engine, bits of information were organized
so that it can be retrieved easily.

2. Raise of Awareness- What is happening to the world can be accessed through use
of web search engine.

3. Information Dissemination- Exchanging of information among parts of the world


is available in the web because of search engine.

4. Digital Communication- Search engine is also consisting of different social media


like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter which are new platforms of communication.
