MODULE INTRODUCTION AND FOCUS QUESTION(S):

In module 10 we have discussed the objective norm of morality, the

law which guides and directs us to find our authentic freedom. As explained
an objective norm does not limit man’s freedom but actually perfects
his/her freedom. It is being said that the exercise of one’s freedom is a
limitation of another’s freedom. Law is the binding force to avoid conflicts
in the performance of one’s freedom. Another way that guides and directs
our freedom is the so called the subjective norm of morality, our Conscience.
In this module 11, we will discuss the nature of conscience and its
application in the exercise of human acts and freedom. In this module I ask
what conscience is. Is conscience written in man’s heart to direct him/her
in his/her ultimate end? Why it is called subjective norm? Is conscience leads
me to exercise my authentic freedom? Is my conscience a source of
limitation and restrictions of my freedom? Why I feel guilty when I commit
wrong even nobody knows it? Is my conscience the first mentor in my
decision making? Why my conscience approves & commends; reproaches &
condemns me before, during and after doing an action?

Most of the people today do not regard the importance of their conscience. Most of us disobey even the simplest
instructions or admonishments of our conscience. Some thinks that It is another way of God’s power curtailing our exercise
of freedom. Some people conscience is a creation of religious institutions to infuse fear and obedience for them. People
believe that it is one way of making us always feel guilty of the things we have done good or wrong. It is one way of
investigating, judging and passing sentence on our thoughts, words and actions.

Respondio

Now that you are done with this module. Try to capture and analyze the scenario.

People of today mostly disregard the admonishment of their conscience and follow what they believe that is only good
and right for them. They always cried foul when they are corrected by their personal and proximate moral intuition. As
a person with conscience you are required to create a digital poster that would encourage people to follow their
conscience. You are to present this digital poster to the Bishop, the Rector of UST, and the VP for Religious Education
of UST for approval and imprimatur. Your presentation will be evaluated by group of Theology professors designated
by the Director of CREED. The evaluation will be based on creativity, persuasiveness, and coherence to the teachings
the Church. You have to post it in your facebook timeline and share it as many as you can.

Post-Test

Instruction: In your own words make a moral decision logically and conscientiously in 5 sentences. Choose only one.
(Minimum of Five (5) paragraph)

1. Myra is part of a four-person mining expedition. There is a cave-in and the four of them are trapped in the
mine. A rock has crushed the legs of one of her crew members and he will die without medical attention.
She’s established radio contact with the rescue team and learned it will be 36 hours before the first drill can
reach the space she is trapped in.
She is able to calculate that this space has just enough oxygen for three people to survive for 36 hours, but
definitely not enough for four people. The only way to save the other crew members is to refuse medical aid
to the injured crew member so that there will be just enough oxygen for the rest of the crew to survive.

Should Myra allow the injured crew member to die in order to save the lives of the remaining crew
members?
2. Rodrigo is part of a group of ecologists who live in a remote stretch of jungle. The entire group, which
includes eight children, has been taken hostage by a group of paramilitary terrorists. One of the terrorists
takes a liking to Rodrigo. He informs Rodrigo that his leader intends to kill him and the rest of the hostages
the following morning.
He is willing to help Rodrigo and the children escape, but as an act of good faith he wants Rodrigo to torture
and kill one of his fellow hostages whom he does not like. If Rodrigo refuses his offer, all the hostages
including the children and Tom will die. If he accepts his offer, then the others will die in the morning but
Rodrigo and the eight children will escape.
Should Rodrigo torture and kill one of his fellow hostages in order to escape from the terrorists and save the
lives of the eight children?
3. Ken is a doctor. One of his patients, whom he has diagnosed as HIV positive, is about to receive a blood
transfusion prior to being released from the hospital. He has told Ken, in the confidence of their doctor-
patient relationship, that after he gets his transfusion, and his medicine from Ken, he intends to infect as
many people as possible with HIV starting that evening.
Because Ken is bound by doctor-patient confidentiality, there is no legal way to stop this man from carrying
out his plan. Even if Ken warned the police, they would not be able to arrest him, since his medical
information is protected.
It occurs to Ken that he could contaminate his medication by putting an untraceable poison in it that will kill
him before he gets a chance to infect others.
Should Ken poison this man in order to prevent him from spreading HIV?
CLOSING PRAYER

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit. Amen.

May God the Father bless us.

May God the Son heal us.
May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us, and give
us
eyes To see with, ears to hear with,
hands to do the work of God with, feet to walk
with,
a mouth to preach the word of salvation with,
and the angel of peace to watch over us and
lead us at last, by our Lord’s gift, for the
Kingdom.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit. Amen..
