TECHNICAL REPORT WRITING FOR BIOLOGY - TRIP REPORT

DATE: September 16, 2021

TO: Pier A. LeCompte Zambrana, English professor
FROM: Jorlane M. De Jesús Ramírez, Biomedical Sciences student
SUBJECT: Report on trip to University Theater: UT Southwestern Campus Visit

On September 16, 2021, I visited the university theater from 12:10pm to 1:10pm to
attend a conference offered by Dr. Nancy Street about Summer Research and PhD,
MD/PhD opportunities in biomedical research at UT Southwestern Medical Center in
Dallas, TX. It was brought to campus by the UPR-PRISE Program for the students in
general, but specially students from PRISE and PABRT programs. This report highlights
the results of my trip and details of the conference.

INTRODUCTION OF THE CENTER

Dr. Street presented us with the information about the Medical Center. They have two
major summer internship programs focused on research that help undergraduate
students in the process of translating basic science to clinical practice.

FIRST INTERNSHIP: AMGEN

The AMGEN Scholar Program offers a $5k stipend, ten weeks of research experience,
and an opportunity to present at a symposium at LA, USA. A PRISE member asked
about the deadline and Dr. Street let us know that the application process begins on
November 1, 2021 and is due to February 1, 2022. She encouraged the attendees to
submit applications two months before the deadline, so we can have more probability of
getting accepted.

SECOND INTERNSHIP: SURF NEUROSCIENCE

The SURF NEURO Program is focused on independent research in neurobiology. It
offers a stipend of $5k and weekly seminars and optional classes.

MD/PHD PROGRAM
Dr. Street specified that, although they have an MD program, she would focus on the
MD/PhD program during this conference. They offer a $35k stipend that should cover
eight years of tuition, fees, and health insurance. UT Southwestern also has a Mental
Health Center that cares about the program students. All of those expenses are covered
and paid. A PRISE member asked about the MCAT score average, which is 515.

EXPECTED EXPENSES PER MONTH

She explained that every student should expect the following monthly expenses:
● Rent: $700- $1.6k
● Groceries: $200-$300
● Electricity: $60- $140
● Internet: $70
● Gasoline: $60- $100
● Rent insurance: $9
● Car insurance: $80- $200
CLOSING
Dr. Street provided us with her email and the center’s social media in case anyone has
any questions after the conference. I went to the front once the conference was over to
receive the flyers and communicate my interest. The attendees received no application
fee waiver.
