Competencies:

1. Describe distinctive musical elements of given pieces in 20th century styles;


2. Explains the performance practice (setting, composition, role of composers/performers, and audience) of 20th
century music;
3. Relates 20th Century music to other art forms and media during the same time period.
4. Evaluates music and music performances using guided rubrics.

Introduction
This unit will discuss twentieth-century music and historical and cultural background of the different genres as
well as the period‟s famous composers. Topics on musical styles and representative composers will be
discussed and divided into three movements: Impressionism, Expressionism and Electronic and Chance Music.

Famous masterpieces of prominent composers will be discussed and explained through music listening and
analysis. Music sheets will also be provided for forms and analysis of musical styles.

Musical forms that will be discussed in this unit will give new and varied ideas of the period‟s music as
compared with the early periods. Readers will be educated on the major change in sounds but will not neglect
the fulfilment of experiencing great music.
Q2: LESSON 1. AFRICAN MUSIC

We can easily identify African Music if it has yodelling activity and an upbeat music with the
accompaniment of a drum instrument. Music play significant purpose to the culture and
traditions of the Africans. Music celebrates and accompanies every activity: birth, christening,
thanksgiving, harvesting cops, wedding rites, death and mourning, and other gathering of
religious and social activities.

GENERAL CHARACTERSTICS OF AFRICAN MUSIC

MELODY

One of the major characteristics of African melodies is the use of ostinato, a repeated pattern.
Pattern may be short or long phrases depending on the choice of the musicians and the purpose
in the composition.

TEXTURE
Harmony plays a minor role in the African Music. Two or more musicians play improvisation
of the same melody done independently and simultaneously.
RHYTHM

If harmony is one major characteristic in European music, it is rhythm that describes African
music. Upbeat rhythm that can be in African Music thru percussion instruments or using human
body movements.
MACARATU

A dynamic rhythm, first appeared in the African state of Pernambuco.

AFRICAN VOCAL FORMS

BLUES

Blue is a musical form evolved from the African Americans during the latter part of the
nineteen century. It is expressive and soulful type of singing.

SOUL

Soul music refers to gospel-style music with secular lyrics. It combines genres of gospel music,
RnB, and jazz of the African-American. Handclaps and body movements are important features
of soul.
CALL AND RESPONSE

Allows audience to be active participants of their music performances.

SOUL

Religious folk songs. The texts are mostly religious psalms from biblical passages.

GENRES OF POPULAR MUSIC

SOUL

Ballad is a traditional folk music performed by a soloist that expresses a tale in a strophic form
RHYTHM AND BLUES

Also known as r&b or RnB, is a black popular music of the 1950‟s. It is a combination of
different popular music genres like jazz, gospel, and blues.

ROCK AND ROLL

Is a popular style evolved in the 1950‟s from a combination of rhythm and blues and country
western - music characteristics.

ELVIS PRESLEY
Also known as “KING OF ROCK AND ROLL” his performance styles electrified the audience
especially when hearing his rich and wide-ranging baritone voice and energetic dance skills.

THE BEATLES
The british rock group, the Beatles, was formed in formed 1960‟s in Liverpool, England. The
rock was the most influential performers in the history of rock and roll.
DISCO

Is a style of popular music in the 1970‟s and is a distinguished form of dance music. Its name is
derived from French Discoteque, which means a type of dance-oriented nightclub that first
appeared in 1869‟s.

RAP

Is a spoken word delivered quickly in rhymed verses. It is a rock music that evolved in the
„70‟s. It is accompanied by hip-hop music.
BROADWAY MUSIC

Counterpart of opera in the popular music.


JAZZ

Jazz had lively and energetic characteristics. It was rooted in improvisation and characterized
by syncopated rhythm, a steady beat, drumming, percussive sounds, and distinctive tone colours
and articulations and techniques of performance.
