Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

There is no doubt that the world economy is solely supported by business. The

progress of a country is determined by the business. Entrepreneurship is the act of

designing, launching and running a business. It is the process of identifying

opportunities, organizing resources and creating a new business for the purposes of

providing needed products or services to customers according to (Zimmerer and

Scarborough 2002).

Entrepreneurs are defined as individual persons who do not want to be

employed by the government or by other firms but creates their own business and

employed themselves and others. These individuals are usually seen as an innovator,

a source of new ideas, goods, services and business procedures according to

(Investopedia, n.d). Without them the economy cannot go forward and poverty

remains. These are the people who have the skills and competitive when it comes to

business world, also they have the initiative to anticipate current and future needs and

bring good new ideas to market. People who engage in entrepreneurship are called

entrepreneurs. There are entrepreneurs all over the world providing people with new

options to satisfy their everyday wants and needs.

Business competencies skills that the entrepreneur must have for them to be a

successful in the world of business. In the absence of these skills, small-business

owners may find the task of establishing and maintaining their businesses more difficult
SAN JUAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-SHS 3

than it otherwise would be. Though some of these competencies are simply acquired,

many of them can be developed or enhanced with an intensive effort.

According to the World Economic Forum which released the rankings of “Global

Competitiveness Report” for 2011 to 2012, the Philippines ranked 161st among other

countries in terms of entrepreneurship. Although in other countries such as Malaysia,

Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand notched a higher place, there are still successful

entrepreneurs in the country. In the Philippines, entrepreneurship is a great opportunity

considering that it gives jobs to number of people and eventually, lessens

unemployment rate in the country.

It is well known that a career in entrepreneurship offers significant opportunities

for individuals to achieve financial independence and benefit the country by

contributing to job creation, innovation, and economic growth of the country. Today’s

students are tomorrow’s potential entrepreneurs, which may explain why a growing

number of universities offer courses and programs in entrepreneurship.

The entrepreneurial skills that the student can gain while she is studying in

Senior High School can help them to become entrepreneurs. They are expected to

open a business in the future and create job for others and become competitive when it

comes to the business world. In this study we will measure the level of entrepreneurial

skill and competencies skills of the Accountancy Business and Management

graduating students in San Juan National High School – Senior High School. The skills

and knowledge they got from studying in this strand is enough for them to be an

entrepreneur and become competitive in the future.

SAN JUAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-SHS 4

The quality of knowledge that they acquired on the quality of instruction by the

teacher it will help them to ensure that they are equipped with the skills and values that

will qualify them to work in their respective field and to become entrepreneurs.

Background of the Study

Having a good background does not guarantee employments instead they are

looking for one’s expertise, at the same time, their skills. Employability skills are

defined by Rothwell and Arnold (2007), as cited in Mohd Yosuf, et al. (2012), as the

ability to survive in a job. A skill such as availability of work, individual work capacity,

knowledge, creativeness and innovativeness, thinking and willingness to learn is

needed in all kinds of career.

Education is one of the most important methods in developing one’s skills and

knowledge in business, there is a query of whether the knowledge and skills that

students learned in their Senior High School years were already enough for them to be

ready in their chosen career. Throughout the years, secondary education aim is to

prepare students in higher education or in their college days, but today, it aims to help

students to know more about their skills and to enhance their knowledge that will help

students to land on a job.

In the Philippines, the basic Education Program known as the Republic Act no.

10533 series 2012 was signed into law on May 15, 2013 intended to improve the

quality of the high school graduates.

SAN JUAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-SHS 5

According to the Republic Act No. 10533 also known as the Basic Education

Program in the Philippines which is signed into law on May 15, 2013 to improve the

quality of high school graduates to become more competitive and to bring more

success that would contribute to our nation. The addition of two more years of

education will help the student’s to be prepared in employment, entrepreneurship and

skills development as the students will undergo a core curriculum and subjects under

their chosen strand that will help them to enhance their knowledge and ability.

According to Ali et al., on 2014 in competitive word, a graduate does not only

need to be successful in academic achievements but they also need to possess the

relevant skills to be employed by their future employers or preferred work.

The effectiveness of an academic institution will be determined through the

employability of its graduates. The graduates should equip with knowledge, skills and

values because it is the key to enable them to work in their respective field or preferred

work.

The researcher got interested in testing the level of entrepreneurial skills and

competencies of graduating students as the researcher wants that the know that the

skills they acquired in the senior high school is enough to become an entrepreneur and

be competitive in this field. Further, this study provided insights on the context of

entrepreneurial competencies of Accountancy Business and Management students

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Valenzuela, (2014) specified that anti K-12 groups demands that this

educational program encourage students to work after graduating in Senior High

School instead of going to college. Most of these claims are on statistical projections

based on previous academic records of those whom graduated to tertiary education.

The study evaluates the K-12 programs affects Senior High School students in their

choices on whether to go to college or to work right away after graduating. It gives

clearer understanding on whether K-12 curriculum does actually encourage students to

go to college or work immediately as allowed by the program.

A correlational study of personal entrepreneurial competency and the academic

performance of a students that is taking up a business course in Lyceum of the

Philippines University by Laguador, (2013) stated that the students must strengthen

their problem solving skills by practicing exercises that is related to their subject. The

result show that the students need to enhance their knowledge and the teacher must

conduct a lot of classroom activities that would develop the confidence of the students.

The findings also imply that the students must develop the risk-taking capability as well

as their opportunity seeking skill to become successful entrepreneur.

Fadelpoint, (2016) point out two challenges that education faces today. First, is

education, on how to prepare the students for the jobs of tomorrow that do not exist

today; the second one is by building the economy of tomorrow, the digital economy, the
SAN JUAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-SHS 11

fastest growing sector worldwide, the main driver of innovation and economic growth

for the next 50 years. Both challenges are related to entrepreneurship. The skills and

competency of entrepreneurship are very clear: problem solving, critical thinking, team

work and risk taking are the skills that a student must have to become a competitive

entrepreneur. Also the study stated that school must enhance the entrepreneurial

attitudes by providing the students the skill that is necessary to handle the business.

According to Abun, Magallanes, and Lalaine (2018) in their study about

measuring the entrepreneurial knowledge and entrepreneurial intention of Accountancy

Business and Management grade 12 students. The study found that there is a

significant relationship between entrepreneurial knowledge and intention of the

students. This study explains that the entrepreneurial knowledge of a student’s affects

their intention to become entrepreneurs in the future. However, Ramos, (2014)

indicated that most of respondents don’t have any background of having a business,

belong to middle income group and management major students but they agree that

they possess entrepreneurial intentions , skills, and capabilities. Further, it shows that

students’ background does not affect entrepreneurial aim of the student.

In the study of Lacap, (2017) in the entrepreneurial inclination of the Senior High

School students the result revealed that the students’ sex difference does not affect

their inclination towards entrepreneurship. This suggests that male and female

students are not statistically different from each other. This claim is also supported by

the other studies on entrepreneurial inclination (Ahmed et al., 2010; Mensah, 2013;

Ayodele, 2013; the findings also showed that age difference does not affect the
SAN JUAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-SHS 12

entrepreneurial inclination of students. This suggests students’ age has nothing to do

with entrepreneurial inclination. This finding is also supported by previous studies

(Ahmed et al., 2010; bin Mahajar, 2012; Mensah, 2013; Ayodele, 2013). On one hand,

in terms of plan to pursue a college degree, the result displayed that this factor does

not influence students’ entrepreneurial inclination. The means for entrepreneurial

inclination of students who will pursue and not pursue a college degree are statistically

comparable.
