Banner University Medical Center

Surgical Trauma ICU, T1 8NS
1625 N Campbell Ave, Tucson, AZ 85719

Dear Hiring Manager,

My name is Taylor Young and I am interested in the Registered Nurse Surgical Trauma ICU position at Banner UMC. As a
new graduate nurse with 84 combined hours of clinical experience in the Trauma ICU and CVICU at UMC, I am extremely
driven to become a force of the leading Level 1 Trauma Center in Southern Arizona. After two years of clinicals, it has
become clear that I am the greatest asset to a team in the high acuity setting.

During my rotation in the CVICU, I provided compassionate nursing care for 14 diverse and critically ill patients. Working
with rapidly deteriorating heart failure and transplant rejection patients, I have adapted to become a strategic planner
and reduce time and distractions during medication administrations when my patients were on multiple drips and
receiving over 25 medications each shift. I have become accustomed to the culture of an ICU and have tailored my
prioritization skills to reflect a heightened awareness of sepsis lab values, ventilator-associated pneumonia, delirium, and
CAUTIs. I have also assisted during a code, preparing antiarrhythmics and monitoring and recording vital signs for the
benefit of the entire code team.

I have just completed my 186-hour preceptorship at UMC on the PCU MOSU Surg/Gyn Onc 9NS unit working night shifts. I
have strengthened and diversified my skillset through the stabilization of ventilated patients with the management of
insulin drips, heparin drips, non-titratable cardiac drips, and vigilant telemetry monitoring. I have had the ability to truly
get to know my geriatric and surgical patient population and their families, as well as advocating for them and their
psychological needs post-surgery. I am able accelerate the recovery time of patients by upholding the highest level of
quality and safety through wound care, enteral care, tracheostomy care, and drain management, while tailoring patient
education to the needs or limitations of each patient. I have proven myself to be meticulous, technical, and a confident
self-starter with strong critical thinking skills. I thrived working night shifts and used my downtime to assist other nurses
with their complex patients.

My passion for treating and educating the trauma, surgical, and transplant patient population motivates me to advance
my certifications to better serve my patients. When working with critically injured patients, I am the largest advocate. I
voice their physiological and spiritual needs to physicians, transplant teams, and respiratory therapists when they are
often voiceless due to sedation and mechanical ventilation. As someone who has been an ICU patient, I understand how
vulnerable these patients can feel and I want to help them fight through the most difficult period of their life. Based on
my experience in high acuity and surgical units, coupled with my personal values and drive to learn and grow my skillset, I
believe that I would be an asset to the Surgical Trauma ICU at Banner UMC.

Sincerely,

Taylor Young
