Caterpillar offers a factory-installed jacket water heater for improved cold-starting capability.

The Jacket Water Heater with the pump is a complete coolant preheater with thermostat, pump and all
required controls.
Forced circulation of the coolant delivers uniform heating throughout the entire engine, reduces wear from
cold spots and offers a significant reduction in electrical consumption.
The Jacket Water Heater operates automatically when provided contacts are supplied with a 24 Volt DC
signal from the engine.

FEATURES HEATER OPERATION/WIRING

• Factory Installed
A 38 L/pm (10 gpm) pump is located at the heater
• Complete with hoses, thermostat and pump
outlet to pull the coolant through the heater.
• Base frame mounting minimizes engine induced
A fixed thermostat is located inside Element
vibration
enclosure box, near the outlet of Heater and
• Automatically disconnected when engine is responds to the temperature of the coolant inside
running via the generator jacket water heater the tank. The figure below shows the general
relay
design.
• Supplied with UL recognized components A
• Standard thermostat is factory preset B
to 54°C (130°F)
o Optional High Temperature thermostat is
available with factory preset to 71°C (160°F) F

HEATER DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The jacket water heater package is designed to G
efficiently pre-heat the engine by heating and
circulating the engine’s coolant. E
This design results in the following benefits
• Increase life of heater hoses, engine seals, D
and heating elements.
• Improve heat transfer efficiency from
elements to engine coolant.
• More uniform engine temperature distribution.
• Application of a thermostat with a reduced C
thermal differential.
A. Discharge port E. Mounting base
• Lower customer utility costs and increased
heater reliability. B. Pump/motor F. Element assembly
• Heater thermostat’s setpoint is preset from C. Suction (behind unit) G. Thermostat
the factory. D. Power and control wiring
