Executive Summary

In this case study it mentioned a firm which name is Chick-n-Gravy Dinner Line that

produced frozen dinners. They supply their products in the supermarkets and some of the

supermarkets complaints about their products. After this incident the manager of the firm

asked her assistant to investigate and find out what’s going on and give recommendations.

The assistant manager Ann first determined those problems that caused such complaints. She

investigated approximately 800 products from two different production lines. She found five

major problems such as: under filled packages, a missing level, spills items, unacceptable

taste, and improperly sealed packages. She made notes concentrated precisely about the

defects and accommodated those problems and gave recommendations on how to overcome

those complaints.
According to the study, there were mainly 5 problems or defects detected. The 5 problems

were named under labels like-Under filled package, missing label, Spill/Mixed, Unacceptable

Taste, Improperly Sealed. The results were observed from approximately 800 dinners from

two different production lines. These 5 problems were mentioned several times while

customers are complaining. The manager of Chick-n-Gravy asked the manager Ann to find

out the problems.

1. The first problem that needs to be solved is “Unacceptable Taste”. Taste of food is the

main priority of everyone. If the taste of the food is not up to the mark it will lose

customers. To solve this issue changing the chef or giving him/her proper training or

hiring a well-trained chef can also be done. Finally, the recipe needs to be revised on the

basis of customer taste and preferences.

2. Proper “labeling” on the packages is the second problem that needs to be solved. Proper

labeling helps the customers to get information about the product and clear out all the

confusions they have. Proper labeling also attracts the customer. They can install

automated machines to do proper labeling.

3. “Spill/Mix” is another problem which needs to be solved after proper labeling.

Automated machines can easily solve this problem. Manual machines sometimes don’t

always work properly. Errors become lesser while using the automated machines.

4. The fourth defect is “Improperly Sealed”. If a product is not sealed properly, customers

usually avoid these products. Quality checking of a product is always an important thing

to do. If the quality checking department does their work properly and can ensure the

quality, this problem can be solved easily.

5. Under filled package is the fifth problem which needs to be solved. Customers become

dissatisfied when they see these kinds of things. Proper monitoring and automated

machines can easily solve this.

According to the data, there are two production lines and so the improvement process will

also be different from each other. For the production line 2, the problems are- Improperly

sealed, Spoil/Mixed, Unacceptable Taste, missing label and under filled. With a perfect

combination of skillful workers and automated machineries, they can easily solve these

problems.

As for the production line-1 Unacceptable taste is the first thing that needs to be resolved and

on the other hand for the production line-2 Improper sealing is the first thing that needs to be

solved.
