JIS Peduli Annual Report 2016-2017

Message from
Board Chairperson
The Jakarta Intercultural School has a sixty five
year history of communiy service. In 2004,
JIS Peduli was created as a means of
coordinating and qualifying the effectiveness
of our services to the community.

Since JIS Peduli was reorganized in 2012, we have

contributed, financially and otherwise. The proposals
initiated by students and our service partners to
develop premaculture center, roof repair, plastic trash
awareness, relocation project, supporting trash picking
community and refugee learning center. JIS Peduli
has also supported the empowerment of women and
young people through skills training, career days and
improved learning opportunitie. JIS Peduli’s reputation
as a productive member of the international community
would not be possible without the support of the
many individuals and organizations who have joined
us and made generous donations. This special edition
of our annual report includes all of projects we have
supported since our reorganization. Your continued
support is key to the success of JIS Peduli and the
future initiatives of our students and service partners.

Yayasan Cahaya Terang
Tell us about the project that was
funded by JIS Peduli?
JIS Peduli funds were allocated to three
inter-related projects, in order to develop
an educational permaculture center.
The projects were designed
collaboratively with Yayasan Tri Hita
Karana Bali, who offer expert advice and
training on an ongoing basis.

There are three projects that were 2. Cow, pig and chicken “tractors”

JIS students were involved in building
these enclosures!

3. Creation of our first organic garden

beds. We installed a large area (almost
1 hectare) of raised organic garden
beds. These were planted out with
various organic crops such broccoli,
kale, moringa, tomatoes, etc. We
also built a simple nursery for seed
germination, established a bank of

Do you have any plans for the future?

The installation of our rainwater
harvesting system has inspired us to
think about a very big picture idea - one
that could have major implications for
Bali. We want to design a “sustainable
subak” that draws on Bali’s world-
famous gravity fed water irrigation
technology and applies it to the whole
island - not just the irrigation of wet
rice fields. In short, we want to adapt
the roadside ditches that channel
water off road surfaces and into larger
drains and streams, etc, and turn them
into catchment systems that harvest
the rainwater. We are hoping that with
some support from JIS Peduli we can
go ahead and build our next rainwater
organic seeds and started an heirloom harvesting system without the use of
dry rice field. Again, JIS students were a roof and gutters - in other words by

Rawamangun Roof Project

Tell us about the project that was

funded by JIS Peduli?
Every Sunday afternoon Ibu Madrik
meets with an inter-faith group of
children from the local kampung on
the banks of the Ciliwung River. The
children participate in different activities
such as crafts, reading and singing. The
children also have a close relationship
with JIS- travelling to the JIS campus
every week to join in other activities,
such as cooking and science, with the
high school students. Occasionally the
JIS students are hosted by Ibu Madrik
and it was apparent that the old roof
covering the driveway –which was
essential during the rainy season- was
in a very poor state of repair.

18

Did you achieve your goals?

The students took measurements and
designed a replacement. Some of the
challenges encountered were the need
to consider the regular flooding of the
whole area and how the new structure
would impact on the structural integrity
of the house. Eventually –thanks to

generous funding by JIS Peduli- the

structure was constructed and the
Rawamangun children and the visiting
JIS students, now have a dry and safe

19
Bye Bye Plastic Bag

Tell us about the project that was funded

by JIS Peduli?
JIS Peduli provided funds to Bye Bye
Plastic Bags (BBPB) to help the group
spread the word about our initiatives
throughout JIS and parts of the local
community. The fund from JIS Peduli
was used to purchase Bye Bye Plastic
Bags t-shirts and bags which were sold
at the school-wide holiday bazaar in
November and to various students at
JIS High School. It was also used to
host students from other schools on a
Saturday. During this time, we worked
together to find ways to make a difference
in plastic consumption and plastic trash

In the future, we hope to further grow a
partnership and relationship with Bhakti
Luhur and to assist them in any way
they need. We hope to visit them more
regularly as part of the High School Bhakti
Luhur service club.

Please tell us about your experience with

the proposal and funding process. How
could we improve?
The proposal and funding processes
went really smoothly. Tasks were clearly
explained and deadlines were clearly laid

out. The process was very professional

which gave students a unique peak
at professionalism in the workplace.
Everyone was supportive and kind. I don’t
see how the experience could be made
any better.

How did you originally hear about

JIS Peduli?
I heard about JIS Peduli from casual
experiences in school, however I never
knew what JIS Peduli does until applying
for their funds. I have a mom who works
as part of the PVO, and thus, I have
probably heard her talk about JIS Peduli,
but never understood their objectives until
quite recently.

23
Womenesia Club
Did you achieve your goals?
The money provided by JIS Peduli was
used to purchase two electronic sewing
machines for the women at XS project.
Previously, they only had manual sewing
machines. The quality of the garments
produced by electronic sewing machines
is higher than manual sewing machines
and allows the women to produce an
increased variety of garments. They now
sell these garments overseas.
We achieved our goals as they were able
to make waterproof drawstring bags and
canvas tote bags which we sold at FFF
(Family Fun Fair). They are also now able
to take orders from other customers as
the machines are kept at XS village.

Tell us about the project that was

funded by JIS Peduli?
XS Project is an organization that works
with various other student service
clubs with the aim of improving the
lives of Indonesians. We work with
the XS Village which is a track picking
community. Womenesia chose to
work with the women in this village
because they have already established
a relationship with the village and JIS
students. The women in this village tend
to be idle during the day while their
husbands are at work. We have found
that these women are very interested in
learning in ways to help earn money and
support their family as well.

24
JIS Peduli Annual Report 2016-2017

What challenges did you face?

An obstacle we faced was that learning
to sew, including the time and skills
required, was very challenging for the
women. As a result, we only had a few
women who were making products. We
would like to encourage more women in
the XS village to learn how to sew. In the
future we are planning to expand our
service to women in other communities
as well.

Do you have any plans for the future?

In the future we are planning to

apply for the funds.

Urban Gardening Club

Tell us about your project that was

funded by JIS Peduli?
During the past year, the Urban
Gardening Club has been working closely
with the XS Project, an Indonesian NGO.
The XS Project aims to improve the lives
of families living in Jakarta’s trash picker
communities. The XS Project aims to
break the cycle of poverty by providing
education for trash picker children, and
educates the public on the effects of
trash on society and the environment.
It supports families of the trash picker

JIS students are articulate and

passionate about what they do. In order
to qualify for a loan or grant for their

funding applications and present it to the
JIS Peduli Board.

The fund always needs to be replenished.

Any individual, organization or company
that would like to donate can find
information on how to do this on the next
page under “Giving to JIS Peduli”.

Every year we produce an annual report

so that we are accountable to our
stakeholders. We believe in the valuable
work of our students and service partners
and see the positive impact that their
efforts have on the recipients. Even more
importantly, we see how this helps our
students to truly live up to the JIS vision
of being passionate, inquisitive and
creative individuals - learning to be best
for the world.

The balance of the fund is used to

support student-initiated service
projects. JIS students present their
projects to the JIS Peduli Board.
