Global  Goals  Working  Groups
Participants  Briefing  Document

Dear participants,

We all from the Hague project peace and Justice team are delighted that you will join us at  Humanity
House  in  The  Hague  on  Friday  23  October  for  a  day  of  interactive  and  thought-‐provoking  discussions  to
celebrate  the  70th  Anniversary  of  the  United  Nation.  Your  participation in sharing your experiences and
knowledge will help to identify pathways to successfully execute the newly adopted UN Sustainable
Development Goals. Focus will be on the scope and execution of goal #16: Promote peaceful and
inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective,
accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels,,  an  ambition  closely  aligned  with  The  Hague’s  role  as
the  centre  of  expertise  in  international  peace  and  justice .

The working groups kick off an event in which students, young professionals and representatives from
government, academia, private sector and NGOs discuss execution of goal 16 in workshops,
HagueTalks and dialogues. Aim is to collectively craft an execution agenda on the basis of personal
experiences and ideas, addressing concrete and actionable issues, actors, forums and timelines.

Driving the working group dialogue is a draft ‘Hague Manifesto’, envisioning an approach to tackle
implementation of goal 16. The working groups will test, assess and amend the Manifesto which is
currently in inception phase. We aim to send it to you later this week. The amended Manifesto will then
be presented during the Peace Palace 70 years United Nations formal celebrations in the evening. This
will be the start of an action driven and inclusive process to contribute to executing the Global Goals,
and specifically goal 16. We welcome very much the broad representation and look forward to sharing
thoughts and mutual cooperation.

Some important points:

1. If you arrive in The Hague from abroad you will be allocated a personal assistant who will be your
number one contact point for all your questions. You will receive their name and contact info by
Wednesday. Please advise us of your itinery at your earliest convenience.

2. The venue is in the city center, 15 minutes walk from the train station. If you prefer to take public
transport, trams 2, 3, 4 and 6 all stop in front of the Humanity House, stop Grote Markt. Doors open at
10.30, workshops start at 11.00 am.

3. Remember to bring your ID which is mandatory to gain access to the Peace Palace in the evening. A
coach will bring you there and back to the Humanity House at 22.15. You are invited to the party at the
Humanity House afterwards.

We look forward to meeting you in person on Friday.

Kind regards,

Ingrid de Beer

The Working Groups

Participants in the working groups are first and foremost invited to share personal experiences to unlock
creative thinking. Extra preparation is not necessary. Your work is your preparation. One of the
outcomes of the Working Groups is an assessed and amended Hague Manifesto. Four themes have
been identified to assess the added value of the Hague Manifesto:

1. Governing the World: Law, Justice and Global Regulation

2. The Future of the UN Peace building Architecture and Peace Operations
3. Cyber-Governance and Social Media in Global Governance
4. Global Governance: Climate Change and other Inconvenient Truths

Each working group consists of max 18 participants:

• one or two moderators

• 4 or 5 experts from International Organisations, government and business
• 4 or 5 experts from NGOs and knowledge institutions
• 6 students of which 3 presenting their essays

We will let you know on Thursday 22 October in which working group you will take part.

Approach

Dialogue is central to the working group approach. More specifically: appreciative inquiry, a model for
analysis, decision-making and strategic transformation. Appreciative inquiry uses ways of asking
questions and envisioning the future in order to foster positive relationships and build on the potential of
the collectivity in the group. For our workshops we use a cycle of three steps:

1. DISCOVER: The identification of experiences that work well (30 minutes)

2. DREAM: The envisioning of a process of execution that would work well. (50 minutes)
3. DESIGN: Planning and prioritizing process steps to get to execution using the Hague
Manifesto that will be shared on Thursday (30 minutes)

Flow of the workshop

0:00 - 0.05 Introduction of moderators

0:05 - 0.20 3x5 minute presentations of the winning student essay contest
0:20 - 0:45 DISCOVER the rich experience base in the group
0:45 - 1:30 DREAM the PROCESS towards execution of the Global Goals in particular
Goal 16
1:30 - 1:40 SHORT BREAK
1:40 - 2:15 DESIGN the concrete steps to be taken. Specify its level of execute
readiness
