Title of the Activity: Activity 10.1: What Are You?

1. Aside from looking at the type of root system, what are the other ways to determine if the

plant is monocot or dicot? Write your answer below

a. A plant can be distinguished as either monocot or dicot from looking at the veins of

the leaves. The leaves of a monocot plant will have veins that are parallel to one

another, whereas the veins of a dicot plant will appear to be branched.

b. In flowering plants, you can tell if it is a monocot or dicot by the number of petals and

other flower parts. Monocots have flower parts in threes or multiples of threes, while

dicots have flower parts in multiples of fours or fives.

2. Go around your backyard and randomly observe 10 plants from the field. Determine if the

plant is monocot or dicot and fill up the table below.

Common Name of the Plant Monocot or Dicot What makes you say it’s a
(with picture) monocot or dicot?
1. Ixora/Santan Dicot An Ixora/Santan plant is
classified as a dicot from the
number of petals in its
flower. A typical flower has
four petals. They also have
broad leaves and herbaceous
stems.

2. Aloe Vera Monocot The leaves of Aloe Vera

have parallel venation. In
addition, whenever I
transfer these plants, I can
observe the network of
fibrous roots. Both are
characteristics of a monocot.

3. Garlic Monocot Observing closely, the veins

of the leaves of a garlic plant
all run parallel. As the plant
begins to sprout, only one
cotyledon emerges from the
soil. A garlic is therefore
classified as a monocot.

4. Hibiscus Dicot As can be seen in the photo,

a Hibiscus flower is typically
five-petaled. The flowering
parts of the plant also
appear in multiples of four
or fives. It is therefore
classified as a dicot.

5. Desert Rose Dicot The flowers of a Desert Rose

is typically produced in
multiples of four or fives.
Each flower consisting of
five petals. The leaves of the
plant are alternate and
spirally arranged; all of
which are distinct
characteristics of a dicot.

6. Onion Monocot Parallel veins run along the

leaves of an onion plant. It

also has a fibrous root
system. Both of which are
distinct characteristics of a
monocot.

Monocot All types of grasses are

monocots. Each blade of a
lemon grass plant also
displays parallel veins. It
also has a single cotyledon.
Hence. It is a
monocotyledon.

Jasmine/Sampaguita yields five petals. It is also
produced in multiples of
four or more. The leaves of
this plants are broad, and
display a branch-like vein
formation. All of these are
characteristics of a dicot.

9. Coconut Tree Monocot The leaves of a coconut tree

are typically thin and strap-
like which display parallel
venation. These are common

characteristics of a monocot
plant.

10. Mung Bean Dicot When a mung bean plant

begins to sprout, two
cotyledons appear. Looking
more closely, you can notice
that the veins of the leaves
are alternating and net-like.
Both are clear
characterizations of a dicot
plant.
