4. Steps of Construction:

4.1 Layout & Marking:

The drain cross section shall be decided based on the c/c distance (L) of proposed GRDA Track as
mentioned in the approved drawing. Suitable modification may be done in the section to suit site
condition with prior approval from the engineer. Layout marking shall be marked as per the drawing.

4.2 Excavation:

MS/8155 /PM/12 Rev No.: R1
Methodology for Construction of Page No: 15 of 5
Drain (Cast-In-Situ & Pre-cast) Date of Rev: 23-01-2019

The excavation for the drains shall be done only through mechanical means by Excavators/
Backhoe by maintaining the gradient as per approved drawing of Drain section to be constructed.
Wherever necessary the dressing of the excavated surfaces will be done manually.

4.3 Bed Preparation:

Method Statement
MS/8155 /PM/12 Rev No.: R1
Methodology for Construction of Page No: 16 of 5
Drain (Cast-In-Situ & Pre-cast) Date of Rev: 23-01-2019

After the excavation is completed in the section, the bed shall be prepared by manual dressing
maintaining the required gradient. In event of excess excavation, the extra depth shall be made up with
sand fill or suitable material as per direction of engineer. The levels of drains shall be checked at regular
interval by Auto level.

4.4 General Construction Methodology (Cast-in-situ):

I. Formwork

Methodology for Construction of Page No: 17 of 5
Drain (Cast-In-Situ & Pre-cast) Date of Rev: 23-01-2019

Formwork of required length and size shall be provided for laying and placing of concrete. Side
formwork shall be used for drain’s side wall concreting. All materials for formwork will confirm to
BS. Vertical formwork including channels, plates/ plywood, horizontal soldiers, clips, clamps bolts
and nuts made of structural steel and shuttering should be leak-proof by using foam.
The removal of Formwork will depend upon the climatic conditions or after the time as given
below lapses;
 Walls and Vertical faces & Slant faces: 12 to 24 Hours

In every reuse the shuttering will clean with manually or with puffing machine. Side slopes will
be maintained as per approved drawings.

II. Reinforcement
The reinforcement used in the structure shall be TMT bars of grade B-500 B conforming to BS
4449 and approved BBS shall be checked by Engineer in charge on prior intimation. Reinforcement
shall be free from Oil, dust, dirt and proper stacking should be ensured. Reinforcement shall be

placed as per drawing & specification along with required concrete cover for both precast & cast-in-
situ using spacer concrete blocks will be employed to ensure the concrete cover as per design.

III. Placing of Concrete

The placing and compaction of concrete shall be done as per BS EN 206. Concreting from
Batching plant will be transported by the Transit Mixers to the pouring point.
Placing of concrete will be done by concrete pump in the restricted or no access areas &
directly by chute from the transit mixers for both precast & cast-in-situ.

But while placing the pre-cast segments at the site proper care will be taken while handling, the
gradient & alignment will be maintained and then placed by matching the previous segment.

IV. Curing
Curing shall commence on all exposed surfaces of concrete immediately after the formwork is
stripped & maintain dampness by sprinkling of water for a period not less than 7 days from the date
of placing of concrete or shall be applied with a coat of Curing compound where ever necessary for
both precast & cast-in-situ.

V. Backfilling

Drain (Cast-In-Situ & Pre-cast) Date of Rev: 23-01-2019

Backfilling shall be in layer of 225 to 300 mm with proper compaction by approved Soil for
both Pre-cast & Cast-in-situ.

4.5 General Construction Methodology (Pre-Cast):

The Complete process is same as in cast-in-situ which is explained above but is carried out in
the controlled conditions at casting yard inside the camp itself the extra activities involved are
mentioned below:
I. Transportation

Drain (Cast-In-Situ & Pre-cast) Date of Rev: 23-01-2019

The casted & approved Drain segments will be transported/shifted to the site location with the
help of trailers and at most care will be taken to protect the edges by placing proper packing all
around the touching surfaces. The loading and unloading of segments will be handled with crane &
Hydra or equivalent equipment.

II. Fixing
The segment to segment is matched properly without any gaps and the joint is filled with the
cement-sand mortar (1:4 volumetric).

construction equipment (private vehicles) entering in to the work site.
b) Suitable warning signs shall be erected & traffic shall be warned before entering such sections.
c) Flagmen shall be stationed on either ends of the section to guide the traffic.
d) Precautionary retro-reflective signs shall be erected & safety cones / bamboos shall be placed in
areas where this activity is being carried out.
