A Need Analysis of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) for Seller around Tourism Place
at Makam Bung Karno

Abstract. The aim of this study was to analyse the sellers’ perceptions to their needs for English
for specific purposes at Makam Bung Karno, Blitar. The study was conducted at Makam Bung
Karno at October 2021. This study applied both qualitative and quantitative research method.
There were 8 participants engaged in the study. The data was collected directly from sellers’
response to questionnaire items and the interview. The result of this study showed that the most
needed and desired English skill to learn is speaking by including some materials related to
greeting foreign tourists, mentioning the price of the product, and explaining the seller's product.

The study’s goal is to analyze the sellers’ perceptions to their needs for English for specific
purposes at Makam Bung Karno, Blitar.
Advantages
This study has not been done by many previous researchers and this study has many benefits to
help sellers to communicate in English well.

8 sellers around Makam Bung Karno. 5 for questionnaire and 3 for interview

(1) The respondents rarely using and never using English in their work is due to their lack of
English language skills
(4) The respondents can greet foreign tourists using English, but they cannot mention the price of
the product and explain their product in English,
(5) Most of the respondents chose the classical learning system and chose the WA application as
a learning media,
(6) Most of the respondents want to take an English course once a week to achieve each of the
goals obtained after attending the course
