What’s New

”A massage has many important health benefits. It can help you maintain physical, mental,
and emotional wellbeing, especially when it is part of your regular wellness routine” by
Anita Brown of The Health Benefits of Massage.
Our body needs not only nutritious food, exercises, proper diet but also a time to give a
break like a massage. We know that massage is also an extra expense that we need to
spend on it. According to Mc Elliot, in Theoretical definition: “Healing is a positive, subjective,
unpredictable process involving transformation to a new sense of wholeness, spiritual
transcendence, and reinterpretation of life”.

So now, let us further study about it.

What is It

Massage therapists are trained to focus on the fact that the body is an integrated organism.
To treat a person effectively, we must look at the whole picture. This includes not only the
physical symptoms but also the way other factors such as lifestyle, diet, and activity level
related to the changes we are seeing in the body. When deciding how to treat a client,
therapists must focus on restoring balance to the system. Gathering as much information as
possible about the client so we can see how the body has changed its function and work to
correct the system.

8
The human being is essentially a spiritual being manifesting and expressing itself through
the body and the soul. These three elements, the body, soul and spirit, together with give us
our threefold nature. The spirit is our individuality, our divine nature, which is eternal and
permanent. The soul is the unseen part of ourselves, the seat of our feelings, it is also called
the aura or the mind. The body is the three dimensional part of ourselves which is not
permanent and subject to physical laws. In turn, each one of these three elements of our
being contains within it a threefoldness.

THE BODY

The body consists of the head, the trunk and the limbs and within these three we find the
three major systems of the body. When we observe these more closely, we see that the
head is round with a hard exterior and a soft interior. We think with our heads and the
majority of our sense organs are located in the head. The headrests at the top of our spinal
cord and operates best when it is still and cool. The brain/nervous system is contained within
the head and it is in our heads that we are most awake and conscious

THE SOUL

We have three soul faculties that relate to these three areas of the body: they are thinking,
feeling and willing. Thinking is a very rational activity – we want to know things and they
need to make sense. Thinking is an activity in which we need to be awake and conscious. It
is our cognition, the process of recognizing something. Our feelings are not as rational as
our thinking – they have a more dreamlike quality to them, are less structured and not as
awake. We can measure our emotional intelligence by the ability to understand our feelings
as well as other people’s feelings. All experiences in life touch us through our feelings.
Willing is our motivational energy – our will to live and to experience life. A lack of motivation
equates to a lack of purpose.

THE SPIRIT

The three spiritual faculties are imagination, inspiration and intuition. Our imagination is the
creative faculty which enables us to visualize images and form pictures. Dreams are a form
of imagination. It is unbounded and free and the source of our ideas, and insights. We draw
on inspiration when we can go beyond ourselves and experience oneness through spiritual
practice, meditation or yoga. We also find inspiration in the arts, music, drama, paintings,
eurhythmy and dance. Being moved by something beautiful in nature also fires our
inspiration. We use our intuition when we do the right thing at the right time and everything
falls into place. The more you are in the flow of life, the more you can bear the fruits of your
intuition. How we live our lives has a profound effect on our spiritual intuition. The physical
world is a reflection of the spiritual world.

To see a World in a Grain of Sand

And a Heaven in a wildflower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
- William Blake

9
The International Spa Association (ISPA) Education Committee developed the 10 Elements
of the Spa Experience. Their goals were to help define the elusive and ever-changing nature
of the spa experience and to create a foundation, a common language, and a career path for
the emerging spa professional.
1. Water: the internal and external use of water in its many forms.
2. Nourishment: what we feed ourselves.
3. Movement: vitality and energy through movement, exercise, stretching and fitness.
4. Touch: connectivity and communication through touch, massage and bodywork.
5. Integration: the relationship between mind, body, spirit and environment.
6. Aesthetics: the appreciation of and active search for beauty.
7. Environment: location, weather patterns, water quality, natural agents and social
responsibility.
8. Cultural Expression: the scientific, political, and spiritual belief systems of the time;
the healing power of the arts.
9. Social Contribution: the cycle of giving and receiving; commerce, volunteer efforts,
and intention as they relate to well-being.
10. Time, Space, Rhythms: the perception of space and time and its relationship to
natural cycles.

Movement and touch is an appreciation of beauty, it is also our connection to the

environment, cultural expression, social contribution, the healing quality of water, and
nourishment both of the body and the soul are the essential concepts on which spa is
founded. The spa experience can be life-changing. Far from being just a luxury, spa therapy
represents the bold first step toward a better form of health care. Its future is in the hands of
dedicated therapists and visionary spa owners who can provide a space where clients can
experience balance and celebrate life while receiving exceptional care.

The Balance of Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Water, Metal and Earth)
The five elements (Wood, Fire, Water, Earth, and Metal) first appeared during the spring and
Autumn Period (770-476 BC). It is mostly used in Chinese medicine, philosophy, Fengshui,
fortune-telling, and martial arts.

The 12-Year Cycles of the Five Elements

Each zodiac sign also has an element according to the 12-year cycle of the birth year. Each
12-year cycle starts with a year of the Rat, followed by Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake,
Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

The Fixed Elements of Each Chinese Zodiac Sign

In Chinese astrology, each of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs is associated with one of the five
elements, which is known as the fixed element of the sign:

Interactions between the Five Elements

Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according to the five elements'
generating or overcoming relationships. Generating and overcoming are the complementary
processes — the yin and yang — of Five Element Theory.

Generating processes promote development, while overcoming processes control

development. By promoting and restraining, systems are harmonized and balance is
maintained.

The control cycle balances the creation cycle by inhibiting or suppressing the energy of the
elements connected by lines to make a five-pointed star.

 Metal controls Wood by cutting it.

 Wood controls Earth by holding it in place with roots.
 Earth controls Water by containing and absorbing it.
 Water controls Fire by extinguishing it.
 Fire controls Metal by melting it.

11
The origin of the Five Elements of Nature

Thousands of years ago, people lived in a very close and interactive way with Nature. They
were affected by seasonal changes and weather much more than we are today. Day in and
day out the patterns of the seasons were observed and interactions between the elements
were understood. If there was a drought, there would be fire. Too much rain would bring
flooding and dampness. Springtime brought activity and planting; winter was a time to rest
and reflect. In China, this observation of the season and elements was also applied to our
bodies and used as a way to heal illness and understand health. This tradition views the
world as being made up of five elements. These five elements (also known as the Five
Phases) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element has many associated
qualities. Each element also has a season, color, taste and Yin/Yang Organ Meridian pair
that reflect some of those qualities.

The yin yang theory has a close relationship with the five elements theory. They are often
used simultaneously to explain natural phenomena. Ancient Chinese medical philosophers
integrated the yin yang and five elements theories into their medical practices as early as
the Warring States Period (475-221BC). As integration of these theories took place, a more
formalized system of medicine was established. Today we refer to this medical system as
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

The Five Elements and their Relationships with Nature and the Body

The five elements correspond to different aspects of the natural world and the body. Wood,
for example, corresponds to spring and wind in the natural world and the liver, gall bladder,
eyes, and tendons in the body. (See Table 1 for a summary of these relationships.)
Table 1

12
As shown in the above table, there are organized relationships between the elements,
nature, and the body. The different vertical characteristics belong to the same element, and
horizontally, each character interacts with another according to a specific order and element.
Working within this system of thought, everything correlates with nature.

What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of the soft tissues of the body. It involves the
movement of the joints and the stimulation of the circulatory system. Massaging the soft
tissues flushes toxins from the body, increases range of motion, reduces inflammation,
relieves pain, and allows you to remain flexible. Deep tissue massage strengthens the
muscles and connective tissues and relieves muscle tension. The body is allowed to relax
and the mind soon follows. Massage therapy restores balance to both the body and the
mind, allowing them to function together. Massage therapy’s ability to increase circulation
provides the brain with additional oxygen making it easier to process information and
respond more quickly during times of stress. (2020 BACKFIT HEALTH + SPINE)

There are lots of benefits that massage can give

1. makes us relax
2. reduce our pain and fatigue
3. it makes also a good blood circulation
4. reduces anxiety and depression
5. boost white blood cell counts
6. improves sleep
7. reduction of stress hormones
8. enhance exercise performance
9. calm mind
10. improves posture
