MODULE 3: Necessary Art Concepts

INTRODUCTION

After successfully completing this module, you should be able to:

1. Create a still life painting

I. Necessary Art Concepts

A. Subject
 It is the literal meaning of the artwork.
 It pertains to the most recognizable object in the picture or the centerpiece in a
work of art.
 There are five major subjects frequently explored by artists. These are the ff:

1. Still Life – a collection of inanimate objects arranged together in a specific

way.

Remember this!

life.
2. Landscape – natural sceneries, mountains, cliffs, rivers, kapag landscape ang
pinag-uusapan, ang subject ay buong scenery.
3. Nature - focused view or interpretation of specific natural element, kapag

4. Portraiture – image of a particular person or animal or group thereof

5. Abstract - a non-representational work of art

B. Content
 It refers to the message, idea, feeling, theme, or belief, which the artists
want to convey.

C. Medium
 It refers to the material/s or stuff used by the artist, the physical means by
which the artist communicates.
 Ex. Painting: watercolor, oil, acrylic, chalk pastel
Music: voice or musical instruments
Sculpture: wood, marble, clay

D. Techniques
 They are the artist’s means or ways of using the different art elements,
principles, and media.
E. Style
In art, when we talk about Style we can be referring to:

 Art of a particular historical time period (Medieval)

 Art of a particular nation (Italian Renaissance)

 A particular group of artists (the Pre-Raphaelites)

 The manner of an individual artist (Rubenesque, Titianesque, Warholesque,

Muchaesque)

 A technical or artistic approach (Pointillism, Photorealism, abstract, realistic

etc…)
