TEENS THREE FINAL EXAM Paper 2
Time allowed: 1h.15’ (+ List: 1h. 30’)

SECTION A: Reading Comprehension

Read the text and circle the correct option, true (T) or false (F).

Rabbit Kekai the 95-year-old Beach Boy

Albert ‘Rabbit’ Kekai was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1920. He lived with his parents and
five siblings near the shore at Waikiki. He tried surfing for the first time when he was three. His
uncle, a life-guard, taught him how to surf and by the age of five he was surfing on his own. He
continued surfing until he died at the age of 95.
Albert got the nickname ‘Rabbit’ because he was fast. He said that he could run 100
metres in 9.6 seconds. When he was six, he could already ride the big waves with the older
boys. In those days, the surfboards were very long and heavy, compared with today, but Rabbit
was able to control the board with his quick footwork. Today’s best surfers can’t use those
heavy old surfboards. ‘They look like beginners,’ said Rabbit.
Rabbit was out on his board in World War II when the first bombs fell on Pearl Harbour in
1941. ‘We could see all the smoke,’ he said. During the war Rabbit worked as a scuba diver in
the US army. In 1945, he returned home and started surfing again.
He taught many of Hollywood’s most famous actors to surf – stars such as Gary Cooper
and Kirk Douglas. Later on, he taught Kirk’s son, Michael Douglas. Rabbit said Michael learned
quickly. He could surf after just four lessons. Rabbit started “The Rabbit Kekai Keiki Surf
Contest”, which was held every year at Waikiki Beach to promote surfing for Hawaii's children
(keiki means "child" or "little kid" in the Hawaiian language).
In his last years Rabbit Kekai still surfed every day and he continued giving lessons. He
also travelled to a lot of competitions around the world together with Lynn, his wife. With his
fashionable sunglasses and Bermuda shorts, he looked like a real beach boy. In 2012 he was
included into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in California. Kekai died on May 13, 2016 at Leahi
Hospital in Honolulu.
