Lesson Idea Name:

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of
different living organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.1 Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active
role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the
learning sciences.
Selected Technology Tool: iMovie

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

The technology tool used in this lesson plan will promote students engagement. Students love to use
technology and creating their own movie will excite them and get them involved in the process. This
enhances learning in the classroom as the students will get to apply their knowledge by creating. Students will
have to research their chosen animal or plant and turn their findings into a movie with information. This will
help to solidify understanding.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will be used to expand upon student learning at the end of a lesson. The teacher will start by
having the students complete a Nearpod activity that is about the life cycle of a bean plant. The teacher will
then have the whole class do a discussion about what they thought was interesting and what they wonder.
Next the teacher will have the students walk outside and see if they can find any other plant growing in any of
these stages. The students will report their findings to their classmates. Next the teacher will show the
students a video that was made using imovie as an example. The teachers video will display information
about the life cycle of a bean plant.

The students will be assessed on their learning through the closing of the lesson. The teacher will have the
students create their own imovie using tablets in the classroom. The students will get a choice to choose any
plant or animal to make a life cycle video on. The students can choose to work individually or on their own.

Once students have completed their videos, they will present to the class and receive feedback from their
teacher through a graded rubric.

Importance of technology:
The tool iMovie is critical to the project as it will engage students and create a video that they can then go
back and watch later to help with their comprehension. The project could be done without this technology
but the technology enhances it. Students could easily draw on a poster, but students will be much more
engaged while creating a movie, and learn basic technology skills as they navigate the tool.

Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

An issue that could arise while doing this project would be that the students would need to use the internet
to research the life cycle of their chosen animal or plant. To minimize risks and alleviate concerns from
parents, I would have the students research information on the schools library resources. The students would
be able to search on the internet for information if they cannot find it in a book in the library, but any harmful
websites that could be reached by the students would be blocked which would diminish those concerns.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activities created would impact student learning mainly by getting the students engaged in their work.
Students are often board with doing the same traditional information posters in class, and this would give students a
chance to challenge themselves and create something that they can be proud of. To extend this lesson, students could
make a Kahoot for their classmates from the information for their video. Students would be able to participate and test
their knowledge.
