Message from the

LAPS Great Community, Great Schools
Traverse City Area Public Schools
December 3, 2021
Dear TCAPS Families.
After students arrived at East Middle School this morning, TCAPS Administration was made
aware of a potential threat towards East Middle School. Within minutes of this report, East Middle
School administration and local law enforcement were able to immediately identify the threat and
respond to ensure the threat was contained and non-credible. An investigation will be continuing
and TCAPS will fully cooperate with local law enforcement.
This event is a reminder of the critical importance in reporting any incident that may be of a
threatening nature. We are proud of the students who reacted appropriately and wish to use this
experience to remind all students to always speak up when they hear or learn of any potential
threat. Students can always talk to any staff member, call 9-1-1, or can anonymously report an
incident at any time to the OK2SAY tip line (855-565-2729), text to 652729, or email
ok2say@mi.gov,
Parents are also encouraged to discuss the topic of safety and violence with their children. The
National Association of School Psychologists created a resource for parents and teachers to talk
with children. You can find this information at: Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents
and Teachers (nasponline.org)
Student and staff safely remains TCAPS priority. At any time, should a building or the district
need to close due to a threat or recommendation by law enforcement, parents and students would
receive that information on the district website and through normal building communications. If
you have concerns or questions about safety and security at TCAPS, please reach out to your
building principal. We are here to assist.
