The 8th Edition of Kanski’s Clinical
Ophthalmology provides a comprehensive
overview of the most common ocular dis-
eases, including dry eye, glaucoma, uveitis,

macular degeneration, retinal detachment,
cataract, and vitreous opacities. The text also
outlines the treatment of more complex
entities, such as ocular tumors, acquired
corneal dystrophies, blunt trauma, chemical
burns, and binocular vision disorders. The
author includes a review of the most fre-
quently documented ocular side effects of
systemic medications, which further en-
hances this text.
The author expertly describes the various
complexities of ocular disease management
in an efficient and straightforward manner.
Each chapter includes lists of key clinical
pearls, bulleted management strategies, and
detailed clinical images that clearly illus-
trate pertinent anatomy and disease states.
I was also pleased to see that the treatment
options discussed for the various conditions
were current. By contrast, I have reviewed a
number of other texts that included fairly
dated treatment options that were either
impractical by contemporary standards or
simply were no longer considered standard
of care. It is also worth noting that although
this book does not offer a thorough, step-by-
step approach to surgical intervention, it
does provide the reader with an adequate
overview of general ophthalmic surgery in
areas where it is applicable.
The index is organized pragmatically and
is easy to search. While I was in clinic one
day, I used the index to locate a number
of conditions and termsVno matter which
pathology I referenced, the index consistently
directed me to the correct section with ease.
The text would benefit from an expanded
reference section. Not all subjects covered in
the book included a list of citations to cur-
rent peer-reviewed journal articles or clini-
cal studies. There were several instances in
which a specific source could have served as
a valuable complement; however, the text
provides sufficient information to aid the eye
care provider in day-to-day clinical practice.
Overall, this is an excellent textbook that
highlights numerous anatomical structures
and disease states in a thorough, yet concise,
clinically relevant and informative format.
