AT SUMMIT PLANNING COMMITTEE

CONTEXT & THEME OF THE SUMMIT

SNO FEEDBACK SUGGESTED BY

Based on recent estimates, over a billion people worldwide are impacted by disability,
doubling over the next 10 years. About 80% of the estimated one billion live in 1
developing countries. The International Labour Organization reports that 73.6% of
persons living with disabilities in India are outside the labour force. Those with mental
disabilities, women with disabilities and those in rural areas are the most neglected. On 2
the other hand, only 1 in 10 people in need globally have access to assistive technology
due to high costs and a lack of awareness, availability, trained personnel, policy and
financing. This problem is more acute in low- and middle-income countries. 3
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has now recognized access to
assistive technology as a human right and has called for international cooperation to 4
improve its access
