I. In each of the following, use the ten-step process of testing hypothesis.

1. The cold medicine Dozenal bears a label indicating the presence of 600
mg. of acetaminophen in each fluid ounce of the drug. The Food and
Drug administration randomly selected 65 one-ounce samples and found
that the mean acetaminophen content is 589 mg., with a standard
deviation equals 21 mg. Using an α = 0.01, test the claim of the
manufacturer that the population is equal to 600 mg. Would you buy this
cold medicine?

2. The Tobacco Manufacturing Company advertised that its best selling

cigarettes contain at most 40 mg. of nicotine but, the Protect consumers
Organization ran tests on 10 randomly selected cigarettes and found that
X = 43.3 mg. and s = 3.8 mg. The distribution of the nicotine content is a
normal distribution. Using a significance level of 0.01, test the “Protect
the Consumers Organization’s belief that the mean is greater than 40 mg.
