Since its independence, India has experienced steady growth in the steel industry,

thanks in part to the successive governments that have supported the industry and
pushed for its robust development.

Further illustrating this plan is the fact that a number of steelplants were established in
India, with technological assistance and investments by foreign countries.

In 1991, a substantial number of economic reforms were introduced by the Indian

government. These reforms boosted the development process of a number of industries
- the steel industry in India in particular - which has subsequently developed quite
rapidly.

The 1991 reforms allowed for no licenses to be required for capacity creation, except for
some locations. Also, once India’s steel industry was moved from the listing of the
industries that were reserved exclusively for the public sector, huge foreign investments
were made in this industry.

steel industry proves to be century old in India and this has grown leaps and bound in past years. Taking a leap from the
8th position as in the year 2003 it ranked 4th in 2010.
future of steel industries in India

Steel Industry is expected to become the 2nd in rank by the year 2015 as predicted by the analysts. The scope that finds the
sustainable growth in the fields of steel industry in the recent times is due to the rise in the export and the growing demand in the
manufacturing, real estate and automobile sectors. These have led to this development and have bettered the future of steel
industry in India by strengthening its footing. Steel industry has already proved its strong hold on the construction, housing and
transport and even the engineering sectors like the petro-chemicals, Power generators and the fertilizer industries. It is expected
that the growth rate of the consumption of finished steel would grow at CAGR at around 7% in the financial year 2012 to 2014.
Moreover the credit for the glittering scopes of this industry even is enhanced by the helpful hand extended by the Government by
initiating unrestricted external trade, low import duties, and an easy tax structure.

Tata Iron and Steel Company

This tops the list in the production of steel in India and has shown a steady rise in the growth of steel. This claims to be the sole
value added rich variety of steel products. This has a well mechanized and modernized form of steel plant with modern techniques
of production. 2011 finds this industry increasing its production of hot metal, crude steel and the saleable steel.

Production:

 The change in production percentage of the Hot Metal from the year 2010 to that of 2011 is found to be 3.8%.
 The production of crude steel has found a change of 4.4% from the year 2010 to that of 2011.
 The saleable steel and sales figure has increased in an around 4% in 2011 in comparison to the previous year.
Products: This incorporates a wide range of steel products ranging from coils tubes bars rods sheets, strips and bearing.

Steel Authority of India (SAIL)

According to the data reading of past years SAIL has stood as one of the leading producer of steel in India. This plant produces
some high quality integrated crude steel and some of the special steels too for the domestic constructions, railways, power plants
and even is in high demand for export purpose. This is regarded as on among the some 'Maharatnas' enlisted in country's Central
Public Sector Enterprise.

Apart from these sectors there are some joint ventures that have enhanced the company's growth in the steel. This one of the
Maharatna's of our country enjoys the operational and the financial autonomy. Production: SAIL is excelling in the parameters of
production and has produced more than it expected to. With special attention given to the field of modernization and the expansion
of the projects the company is thrusting in higher production of the specialized and value added steel in higher volumes. The
financial year 2011 has seen 4% high in production than projected. The project for the year 2011-2012 includes specific weightage
given to the consumption of water and on the emission factor too. Very recently SAIL is been highly tagged of going Eco- Friendly.
