INTRODUCTION: We have a popular understanding about the sacraments. There are as many definitions of
sacraments as there are theologians. Tad Guize provides us with a simple yet profound
description that we can use to understand better what sacraments are and their function in our life.

STANDARDS: This module aims to enable students to:

1. Know the meaning of the Sacrament.
2. Understand the purpose behind the sacraments
3. Discuss the division of sacraments.

TRANSFER: In this module the students are expected to understand and learn about the sacraments and its
importance in our daily lives.

TARGET PVMGO/ MORAL OBJECTIVE

CORE VALUE: To develop a sense of moral responsibility, to discern and choose what is right and true for
oneself, others and God’s creation. To keep the environment safe and acceptance of duty to do
good will, courage and perseverance when difficulties come.

ACTIVITY 1: Read with comprehension the following questions and answer it briefly in your paper.
1. Why do you think that there are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church?
2. In your own understanding, how are these sacraments related to the stages of human life?

DISCUSSION/SUMMARY

TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING THE MEANING OF SACRAMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SEVEN

SACRAMENTS

There are several aspects of Guize’s description that we can highlight here. They are celebration, commemoration, symbol
and action.
1. Sacrament as celebration
It belongs to human nature that when something good or great or wonderful happens, there is a form of celebration. In the
Filipino culture, a lot of significant events are celebrated. Guzie refers to these significant event as “peak moments of
life”. That is why it is good to emphasize here the sacraments are celebration of the community. As celebrations, they are
joyful events. What do we celebrate? We celebrate life, health/ healing forgiveness, communion, strength, leadership,
witnessing and the many blessings we receive each day. We celebrate what God did, is doing, and will do for us. We will
see later the seven sacraments celebrate all of these and more.

2. Sacrament as commemoration
We know that we are closer to people who share the same memories with us like members of our families, friends,
classmates, etc. when we are separated for a long time, we organize reunions so that we can go back and celebrate these
shared memories. By doing so, we preserve and strengthen the bonds that unite us.
In the celebration of the sacraments, we come together to remember the common story. As a community of faith,
our lives are intertwined with one another. We remember that we have a common life and a common destiny. Our
celebrations of the sacraments remind us regularly of this truth and call us to a new way of relating with fellow members
of the community. A poet once said, “Gratitude is the memory of the heart”. Sacramental celebration therefore are
expressive of our gratitude to one another and to God who gathers us as a community. Finally, it is important to take note
that our remembrance and celebration can be traced to the fruits of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It is in this
sense that we can explain the catechetical declaration that “Jesus instituted the sacraments”.

3. Sacraments as symbols
Ancient Greek philosophes said the human beings are “rational animals” because as far as we know, only human beings
are gifted with the use of the intellect. In a similar way, we can say that we are “symbolic animals” because we use a lot of
symbols to express important ideas. Symbols can say a lot more than just a word (although words are also symbol).
Sacraments are symbols in the sense that they point us to something more- more than what the eye can see; more than
what is obviously there. We can call this “something more” as God’s constant care for human beings. In other words, the
signs and symbols used in our celebrations of the sacraments externally reveal the hidden action of the Holy Spirit for the
good of the individual and the community. For instance, the act of sharing the bread and wine together during the

Eucharistic celebration is not just an act of eating and drinking. It can point us to God’s call for us to be one; to be in
solidarity with others.

4. Sacraments as call to action

When we celebrate the sacraments, we are called to action. Sometimes, priests end the celebration of the Eucharistic by
saying “The Mass is ended, our mission begins”. This is one way of reminding ourselves that our celebration of the
sacraments is deeply linked to our daily life. By our participation in the sacramental celebrations we are both called to a
mission and inspired to do the mission.
The sacraments therefore, are primarily celebrations of life. In these celebrations, the dynamics of words and actions
become meaningfully alive. We divide the sacraments into three groups; Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing
and forgiveness, and Sacraments of Vocation and Service.
