University of Puerto Rico in Ponce

MEMORANDUM
DATE: September 16, 2021
TO: Professor Pier LeCompte
FROM: Xavier E. Diaz Laboy (M03)
SUBJECT: “Señas de Medicina Veterinaria”

On Thursday, September 16, 2021, I attended a Webinar on “Terminology of Veterinary

medicine and more in Puerto Rican Sign Language (PRSL)” at Universal hour (12:00pm) and it
lasted an hour and a half. They taught us (members and people interested in joining the Pro Deaf
association at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce) everything from the most basic to the main
topic. This report highlights the things I learned on my trip.

WHERE AND WHO PRESENTED THE LECTURE?

The webinar was presented in the virtual modality on the “Google Meet” Platform and the
lecture was led by Yeidee Liz Alvarado and Eduardo O. Ramírez President and Vice-president of
AUPS (Asociación de Universitarios Pro-Sordos) of the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce.

HOW TO REFER TO A PERSON WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS?

Every person should refer to people with hearing impairments as Deaf, any other term is
considered offensive, because the only difference that those people do not have is the ability to
hear.

BASIC TERMS OF SIGN LANGUAGE

To start, Yeidee Liz Alavarado and Eduardo Ramírez explained and showed to us how to say
each letter of the alphabet and numbers 1 through 999. For example, if you are going to say
number one, just lift your index finger, only that finger of your dominant hand and you have said
the number one (1) in PRSL.

CORTESY SIGNS IN PRLS

In this webinar they showed us how to present ourselves to the Deaf community, in this case,
you should say “hello and my name is…” and also they showed us the signs for “Please and
Thank You”.

MEDICAL SIGNS IN PRLS

They showed us the signs of doctor, parasite, veterinary, bone, vaccine, nail/claw, stethoscope,
blood, sterilized, emergency and infection. By making this, they taught the members of the
association how to identify these signs too.

ANIMALS SIGN IN PRSL

The President and Vice-president showed us few animal’s signs like cat, dog, rabbit, goat and
many more. By making this, they taught the members of the association how to identify these
signs too.

CONCLUSION
This webinar would help each person that is interested in this fully developed language and want
to study in whatever area of medical sciences to be prepared to talk and interact with the Deaf
community.
