What you need to know.

Complex fraction is a fraction that has a rational expression either in the numerator, the denominator, or both.

Simplifying Complex Fraction Rules:

Method 1 : Write the numerator as one fraction and the denominator as one fraction. Then, invert the
denominator and multiply.

Method 2: Multiply the numerator and the denominator of the complex fraction by the LCD of the fractions
within the numerator and the denominator. Then simplify.

Examples:
Simplify each.

LESSON 2: Equations Involving Rational Expressions

Lesson Objective

At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

a. solve rational algebraic expressions; and

b. solve problems involving rational algebraic expressions.

What I know.

Complete the table.

What you need to know.

Rational Equation – is an equation that contains one or more rational expressions.

Procedure in Solving Rational Expressions

1. Eliminate the rational expressions in the equation by multiplying both sides of the equation by the LCD.
2. Solve the equation.
3. Check your solution.

Examples:
Solve for x and y.

x 1 x
1. + =
5 4 2

Solution: The LCD of the denominators is 20.

x 1 x
20( + ¿ = 20( ¿ Multiply both sides by the LCD, 20.
5 4 2

4x + 5 = 10x Apply the Distributive Property and then simplify.

5 = 10x – 4x Combine like terms.

5 6x
= Divide both sides by 6.

Substitute the value of x = to the original equation.

y +3 4
2. =
y−1 y−1

Solution: To clear the equation of fractions, multiply both sides by the LCD which is y – 1.

y +3 4
(y – 1) ( ) = (y – 1)( )
y−1 y−1

y+3 = 4
y=4–3
y=1

y +3 4
Check: =
y−1 y−1

1+ 3 4
= Substitute 1 for y.
1−1 1−1

4 4
= Division by 0 is undefined.
0 0

Because zeros appear in the denominators, the fractions are undefined. Thus, 1 is not a solution,
and the equation has no solution. Such false solutions are often called extraneous solutions.

See page 96 – 101 for more examples.

What I have learned.

Solve each equation and check the solution.

y 2 1 3 4 10

What I can bring home.

or not solution if it is not.
