Social networking websites and blogs

Social networking websites allow individuals to interact with each other and build
relationships. When products or companies join those sites, people can interact with the
merchandise or company. That interaction feels personal to users due to their previous
experiences with social networking site interaction

3
Social networking sites and blogs allow individual followers to “retweet” or “repost”
comments made by the merchandise being promoted. By repeating the message, all of the
user’s connections are ready to see the message, therefore reaching more people.Social
networking sites act as word of mouth.Social networking sites act as word of mouth. as a
result of the information regarding the merchandise is being place out there and is obtaining
perennial, additional traffic is born at the product/company.

Through social networking sites, products/companies will have conversations and

interactions with individual followers. This personal interaction can instill a feeling of
loyalty into followers and potential customers. Also, by choosing whom to follow on these
sites, products can reach a very narrow target audience.

Engagement

In the context of the social web, engagement means that customers and stakeholders are
participants rather than viewers. Social media in business allows anyone and everyone to
express and share an opinion or idea somewhere along the business’s path to market. Each
collaborating client becomes a neighborhood of the selling department, as different
customers browse their comments or reviews. The engagement method is then basic to
thriving social media marketing.

Example-
2008 Presidential Election

The 2008 presidential campaign had a huge presence on social networking sites. Barack
Obama, a Democratic candidate for US President, used Twitter and Facebook to
differentiate his campaign. His social networking site profile pages were constantly being
updated and interacting with followers.

Kony 2012

A short film released on March 5, 2012, by humanitarian group Invisible Children, Inc. This
29 minute video aimed at making Joseph Kony, an International Criminal Court fugitive,

4
famous worldwide in order to have support for his arrest by December 2012; the time when
the campaign ends. The video went viral within the first six days after its launch, reaching
100 million views on both YouTube and Vimeo.

Implications on traditional advertising:

Minimizing use

Traditional advertising techniques include print and television advertising. The Internet had
already overtaken television as the largest advertising market. Websites often include banner
or pop-up ads. Social networking sites don’t always have ads. In exchange, products have
entire pages and are able to interact with users. Television commercials often end with a
spokesperson asking viewers to check out the product website for more information. Print
ads are also starting to include barcodes on them. These barcodes can be scanned by cell
phones and computers, sending viewers to the product website. Advertising is beginning to
move viewers from the traditional outlets to the electronic ones.

Leaks

Internet and social networking leaks are one of the issues facing traditional advertising.
Video and print ads are often leaked to the world via the Internet earlier than they are
scheduled to premiere. Social networking sites allow those leaks to go viral, and be seen by
many users more quickly. Time difference is also a problem facing traditional advertisers.
When social events occur and are broadcast on television, there is often a time delay
between airings on the east coast and west coast of the United States. Social networking sites
have become a hub of comment and interaction concerning the event. This allows
individuals watching the event on the west coast (time-delayed) to know the outcome before
it airs.

Social media marketing mishaps

Social media marketing provides organizations with a way to connect with their customers.
However, organizations should defend their data still as closely watch comments and issues
on the social media they use. A flash poll was done on 1225 IT executives from thirty-three
countries disclosed that social media mishaps caused organizations a combined $4.3 million

5
in damages in 2010. The top 3 social media incidents a corporation two-faced throughout the
previous year enclosed staff sharing associate degree excessive quantity of data in public
forums, loss or exposure of lead, and exaggerated exposure to a legal proceeding

An example of a social media mishappening includes designer Kenneth Cole's Twitter

mishap in 2011. When Kenneth Cole tweeted, "Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is
they heard our new spring collection is now available online at [Kenneth Cole's
website]".This reference to the 2011 Egyptian Revolution drew objection from the public.

Swot Analysis of Social Media

Strengths:
Large market reaches or penetration and it’s terribly helpful if you're putting in a digital
engagement strategy (to new individuals, young people). Social media builds a spoken
communication and converse with others and build shut networking bonds that share fast info
exchange. It allows you to follow and connect with people/groups that interest you
– however aren't essentially your friends (as with Facebook). Authors, celebrities, co-workers,
colleges, organizations etc. The campaigns area unit typically cost-efficient within the sense
most of the platforms area unit free. they solely demand time, there's a person's factor: Your
“brand” becomes additional HUMAN. Media exposure are often another strength of this.
whereas Twitter is in an exceedingly robust market position in micro-messaging. Facebook is
that the solely real rival here – and that they attract users for various reasons. It helps to make
robust, future relationships through on-line social networking, at a quicker pace than simply
hoping on ancient face-to-face networking and Gets loads of content. The trade Has developers
making many applications around its API. it's totally-RSS-enabled.

16
Weaknesses:
Tough to coach or win over management team/group members on social media principles as
loads of “Why Bother” from most thought (i.e. Facebook users) individuals area unit there. The
trade incorporates a low retention rate. Only 40%.Lacks tools or resources to trace and monitor
social media campaign results. there's concern regarding info outpouring, liability, security, and
management additionally.
Effort vs results: though it's additional measurable than alternative channels, it's tough
(especially for tiny business operations) to balance the trouble placed on social media against the
results obtained

Consistency: partaking together with your audience at an immediate level suggests that
additional efforts in terms of keeping a homogenous message/ company image
Making up for mistakes: The timeframe to correct errors that have an effect on your audience is a
smaller amount. as a result of you're heavily exposed, your company has got to take action
additional promptly than if you weren’t (especially if individuals area unit having conversations
regarding your complete, you'll have to have interaction and clarify) Blocked at several
worksites: management sees it drops productivity; hurts bottom line

Opportunities:
• Creating/joining on-line presence on sites wherever the corporate presently doesn’t exist, nice
chance for people and organizations to attach and exchange info. It opens a replacement target or
niche markets that ar untapped: students, the public.
• Partnerships with different teams, organizations, schools, government, etc
• Penetration into a replacement geographical market quickly
• accomplishment of interested new members, students, public support and permits you to make
short and future relationships with prospects. It humanizesthe ‘brand’ and makes the
accomplishment method a lot of personal.
• will gain deep insights into period trends, news, and every one of us; “be the heartbeat of the
internet” as aforementioned by Founder line of work Stone

17
• Integration into period games, media, and apps. We’ve barely damaged the surface thus far on
what’s potential. Twitter as real time infrastructure.
• it's going to become the dominant method for businesses to speak with their customers as fast
delivery, stigmatisation opportunities, and increased selling opportunities ar there.
• Being gift wherever stuff happens: folks analysis for info/products/services on-line and worth a
lot of the opinion of different people than no matter a corporation could say regarding their own
provide. If your company is gift in AN interactive surroundings like social media, the
opportunities for engagement, conversion and most significantly clarification of doubts
concerning your whole, ar innumerable.
• Developing a following/ audience those auto-nurtures itself: Your efforts in Social media,
along with the trouble of your following could mean that your audience becomes your best sales
folks
• Talent returning your method effortless: owing to the probabilities of exposure that Social
Media permits for, interacting here could mean that future talent (in the form of workers,
partners or, you-name-it) can come back your method through the ability of connecting online!
• Reach resolute sure teams that ancient media didn’t permit you to: as a result of Social media is
for everybody, sooner or later you’ll stumble upon folks you ne'er thought of as your shopper.
This opens the doors to assembling new relationships however conjointly to valuable feedback
that may assist you develop your merchandise or services a lot of showing intelligence

Threats:
Competitor goes when constant area or same audience with similar campaign conjointly the}
question also arises whether or not this campaign property, will it continue? There will be threat
of Attitudes on privacy: whereas recently it looks most are willing to share the most intimate yet
as mundane details of their life – there may simply be a backlash against this trend. We’ve all
detected of a couple of embarrassing stories concerning oversharing on-line, and a couple of
high-profile examples may build folks rethink their habits. Micro
messaging could be a rage. There’s nothing inherently awe-inspiring concerning a hundred and
forty characters. It got an excessive amount of subject matter in an exceedingly short time. might

18
get burned out and obtaining hazardously spammy/porn spammy. The market doesn’t have solid
revenue model (future advertisements?)
Other social networking sites (MySpace, Tagged, Friend feed, identi.ca, others) might grow and
steal market share and Acquisition by an even bigger player (Google) might spoil early adopters
