SUBJUNCTIVE

In English grammar rules, subjunctive is a verb form rule that is used to express imaginary or
improper situations. This includes wish (hope), doubt (doubt), regret (regret), request (request), and
also advice (advice). In this way we can say that generally the meaning contained in a subjunctive
sentence will be contrary to the facts.

Subjunctive is an infinitive form of verb in clauses that are used after certain verbs,
nouns or adjectives that imdicate importance. This subjunctive is used in clauses.

This subjunctive form will be in the dependent clause and not in the main clause. The
subjunctive is contrary to the tenses rule.

UNIT 121

SUBJUNCTIVE: AFTER VERB

There are several verbs used in subjunctive after verb, such as : advise, ask, beg, command,
decree, demand, desire, insist, instruct, order, prefer, propose, recommend, request, require,
stipulate, suggest, urge, warn.

Construction of sentences that use subjunctive are :

 Positive
Subject + verb ( which shows importance) +that + subject + infinitive
Example :
- She demanded that I go to market today
- They require that everyone put on his mask
 Negative

Subject + verb (which shows impostance) + subject + not + infinitive

Example :

- They recommeded that he not speak too fast


- We suggested that he not go with him
UNIT 122

SUBJUNCTIVE: AFTER NOUN

Subjunctive after noun is used to express needs and suggestions, by using verbs followed by
subjunctive in noun clause.

There are several nouns that come from verbs that require a subjunctive verb, such as :
advice, command, incident, instruction, order, preference, proposal, recomendation, request,
requirement, suggestion.

The subjunctive (after noun) has a construction :

Noun + that + subject +infinitive

Example :

- The recommendation that he share was very helpful


- The command that she kill her friend makes no sense at all
- The suggestion that they be cheked by the police

UNIT 123

SUBJUNCTIVE VERB AFTER ADJECTIVES OF IMPORTANCE; TO INFINITIVE AFTER ADJECTIVE

There are several adjective that indicate the impostance, urgency or requirements used
before the subjunctive verb, they are : imperative, essential, important, (un)necessary, crucial,
urgent.

The sentence contruction :

It is + adjective + that + subject + infinitive

Example :

- It is important that the students prepare books before they goes to school
- It is crucial that she not make any mistakes
- It is urgent that the ambulance breach red lights.

The construction of sentence that use to infinitive after adjectives (adjective) are :

It is + subject + (for somebody/something) to + infinitive

Example :

- It is necessary (for her) to hear the news


Subjunctive ( passive form)

Besides the active form there is also a passive form in the subjunctive. The subjunctive
passive (after verb, after noun, after adjective) has construction :

a. After Verb (Subject + verb ( which shows importance) +that + subject + to be + V3)
Example :
Her mother order that the book be read by Ani
b. After Noun (Noun + that + subject +to be + V3)
Example :
The recommendation that the food be eaten by adults
c. After Adjective (It is + adjective + that + subject + to be + V3)
Example :
It is important that the flower be given fertilizer by her
