GOOGLE CLASSROOM APPLICATION TO TEACH READING

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
Instructional Technologies in teacher training consist of the dimensions of equipment and
programs (purpose, content, educational background and testing types) This the use of
technology in the instructional processes that enhances both teaching and learning by infusing
instructional design and development with tools that eliminate learning in abstract. The main
purpose of instructional technology is to create engaging, effective learning experiences using
available technological tools Technology used for the purpose of fostering student learning
technology that is used to facilitate learning. Instructional technology does not have to be
electronic in nature. Instructional technology should impact the learning environment to provide
students with an opportunity to learn from multiple perspectives Instructional technology can be
either a software or hardware which is used to facilitate learning and improving performance by
creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources
Based on the background above, the writer trying to use an application to teach grammar,
namely Elementary English Application.
B. Research Question
The problems of this study can be formulated as follows:

1. How to teach English reading using “Google Classroom” application?


2. What are advantages and disadvantages of “Google Classroom” application?

C. Purpose of the Study

According to the problem above, the purpose of this study:

1. To find out how to teach English Reading using “Google Classroom” application.
2. To find out advantages and disadvantages of “Google Classroom” application
CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. Google Classroom

One of the important aspects in the development of


education is the language aspect. English is one of the
mandatory and very important foreign languages to

learn. A person's ability to use English is needed


along with the progress of an era that requires
language proficiency. Improving the quality of
education is an important part of efforts to improve
the quality of education in Indonesia. The thing that

needs to be considered in the system in the world of
education is the problem of teaching media used by
educators and students, most of whom still use
conventional learning media models that no longer
meet standards in the education system that follow the
development of the digital era and the development of
the industrial revolution 4.0.

Google Classroom is an application created by Google that aims to help lecturers and students in
organizing classes and communicating with students without having to be tied to class schedules.
Besides that, lecturers can give assignments and directly give grades to students. Each learning
method must contain a formulation of the organization of lesson materials, delivery strategies,
and management of activities by taking into account the factors of learning objectives, learning
barriers, student characteristics, in order to obtain effectiveness, efficiency, and learning
attractiveness (Miarso, 2004).

One way that can be used to carry out the online learning process is by using Google Classroom.
Utilization of Google Classroom can be through multiplatform, namely through computers and
through mobile devices. Teachers and students can visit the address on the
https://classroom.google.com page or can download the application through the Playstore on
Android or through the App Store on iOS with the keyword Google Classroom. The use is free
of charge, so that it can be used as needed.

Smaldino et al. (2008), technology and media can play a large role in learning. If the teaching is
teacher-centered, technology and media are used to support teaching presentation.

Reading comprehension in learning English is one of four skills that must be mastered by
students, even though reading only reads text, students must also be able to understand, skim,
even sifting through the gist of what they have read. They are also expected to fully understand
the new vocabulary they are familiar with, so that students can really master reading in English.
B. The Implementation to Teach English Reading using Google Classroom
One technique to improve students' abilities as well as meet their academic needs and help
them develop skills in reading comprehension is to provide multimedia tools during the teaching
and learning process in the classroom. The result of my research is the use of google classroom
as a solution for new technological innovations in the reading comprehension teaching process
and can be considered as a new way to support the process of increasing student interest in
reading. as well as facilitating lecturers or students to learn more effectively.
Technology and language teaching have been hand in hand for a long time, and have contributed
as a teaching tool in language teaching especially in English writing. However, the use of Google
classroom as a new technology medium in teaching reading comprehension is still full of fear
and insecurity by many lecturers around the world despite the latest developments that apply to
teaching essay writing such as websites, blogs, online journals, and so on.
The application of Google classroom technology can improve the teaching of English and at the
same time allow teachers to rethink what they are doing (Motteram, 2013: 7). However, the
lecturers must play a leading role even if they use multimedia technology. Their position should
not be replaced by computers and other devices. For example, when each lesson is introduced
and spoken English is taught, students can easily improve their listening and speaking skills
which multimedia technology cannot. In fact, the lecturer's interpretation during language
teaching should not be ignored. In principle, English should be used frequently in language
classes to improve student communicativeness.
The consideration of choosing the right learning media, said that by using the term ACTION
(Access, Cost, Technology, Interactivity, Organization, Novelty). Access, meaning that ease of
access is the first consideration in media selection. Cost, meaning cost considerations. The costs
incurred for the use of a learning media must be balanced with its use.
Technology means the availability of technology and ease of use. Interactivity, which means
being able to present two-way communication or interactivity. Organization, meaning the
support of an organization or institution and the way it is organized. In general, most students are
enthusiastic about learning using Google classroom and it can be a solution for the low interest in
learning reading comprehension. Lecturers and students become more enthusiastic in the
learning and teaching process and are no longer limited by space and time because learning can
be done without having to be in the classroom.
C. Advantages and Disadvantages of Google Classroom

Advantages:

1. Very mobile friendly for beginners


The first advantage is that it is very mobile friendly for beginners, meaning
people who are using Google Classroom for the first time will definitely have
no difficulty operating it. Google itself is very concerned about the convenience
of its users. So Google Classroom is designed with a simple but many features.
So it is natural that people who are new to this application can immediately use
it.

2. Easily manage assigned tasks


Besides being easy to use, there are other features in Google Classroom where
when we are given an assignment by our teacher or class admin, we can easily
see it on one page that provides an assignment page. That way we don't have to
bother looking for what tasks have been given by the admin or teacher. So it is
appropriate if Google Classroom becomes an alternative application for online
or online learning. Google Classroom has made it easy be it for students or
teachers.

3. All files go to our Google Drive


The advantage of the third Google Classroom is that all file forms are mp4,
mp3, doc, pdf, zip and many more. All of that automatically goes to our Google
Drive account so we don't have to look for other storage to save the files we've
uploaded. So you don't have to worry about losing files or other documents. It's
all saved on Google Drive.

4. Easily review assignments before sending


Reviewing the task is very necessary, because we can see what errors or
deficiencies are still in the task that we will send. So Google Classroom
provides a feature to view assignments before they are sent. Every learning
application should provide features like Google Classroom's to make it easier to
review our assignments.

5. It is very easy to see announcements from teachers


Announcements in Google Classroom are intended so that teachers can provide
information whether it is attendance, assignments, student photos or other
important announcements. This makes it easier for teachers to submit
assignments on the Google Classroom page. No need to bother sending
announcements via SMS or online messages anymore.

The advantages in terms of announcements are also supported by the ease of


discussion. Because Google Classroom provides discussion space in the
comments column so that we can discuss and are free to send files for
discussion.

Disadvantages:
1. Display that is less attractive to students
The disadvantage of Google Classroom is that it looks less attractive. It only
shows a few selections of images and it's just a cartoon image. Classroom
should provide an image for the class to make it more interesting so that
students who study in Google Classroom don't feel bored. With the appearance
as it is, maybe for some people it doesn't matter but for those who like beauty it
is necessary.

2. When Google Drive is Full the file can't be sent


Weaknesses and weaknesses of Google Classroom that are very visible are
where if our Google Drive is full, the file or document that we send to the
teacher becomes an error and is not sent. This is very annoying for a student
and results in him having to buy a new drive or install a new cloud storage or
cloud storage. Then it is connected to Google Classroom first before using the
Google Classroom so that it can be used.

3. Delivery time can still be arranged


The next drawback is that if we want to send files to Google Classroom, we can
set the delivery time. That is, if we are late in sending files we can postpone the
time on our smartphones a day so that we can submit our files. The original
could not be submitted because it was too late.
CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION

Google Classroom is a service provided by Google to facilitate online learning. Either


make a class or discuss online. And make us efficient. There are several advantages and
disadvantages.
