Natural Disasters

FLOODS
What are floods?
Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an
overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are often caused
by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt or a storm surge from a tropical cyclone or
tsunami in coastal areas.
Its impacts
Floods have large social consequences for communities and individuals. As
most people are well aware, the immediate impacts of flooding include loss
of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and
deterioration of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases.
How to prevent it?

-Introduce better flood warning systems

-Modify homes and businesses to help them withstand floods.

-Construct buildings above flood levels.
-Tackle climate change.
-Increase spending on flood defences.
-Protect wetlands and introduce plant trees strategically.

Droughts
What are droughts?
A drought is an event of prolonged shortages in the water supply, whether
atmospheric, surface water or ground water. It can last for months or years,
or may be declared after as few as 15 days.
Impacts of Droughts
The thing that are affected by Droughts include
 - Economy
 - Environment
 - Social
 - Health
 - Education

How to prevent droughts

 Being mindful of the amount of water you use each day can be a
powerful way to prevent droughts.
 Planting trees is also a good way to prevent drought.
 By installing water cleaning machinery in large water bodies like seas,
oceans rivers.
 On a small scale, you can even divide into groups with people in your
area to clean small water bodies like ponds, lakes etc. and achieve your
goal of fresh and pure water through teamwork.

Drought is a weather-related natural disaster that could go for

months or years. Many people still experience droughts. Drought is a
huge problem in human life. To get rid of drought, we need to come up
with solutions to prevent the problem of Drought. We also need to
prevent the activities that are being responsible for droughts such as
deforestation.

Earthquakes
What are earthquakes?
An earthquake is the sudden movement or trembling of the Earth's tectonic
plates, that creates the shakes of the ground. This shaking can destroy
buildings and break the Earth's surface. ... Seismology studies about the
cause, repeats, type and size of earthquakes. Earthquakes are measured
using watching from seismographs.
Causes of earthquakes
Earthquakes are caused by a sudden release of stress along faults in the
earth's crust. The continuous motion of tectonic plates causes a steady build-
up of pressure in the rock strata on both sides of a fault until the stress is
sufficiently great that it is released in a sudden, jerky movement.
Impacts of earthquakes
Some of the common impacts of earthquakes include structural damage to
buildings, fires, damage to bridges and highways, initiation of slope failures,
liquefaction, and tsunami.
How to prevent effects of earthquakes?
We cannot prevent natural earthquakes from occurring but we can
significantly mitigate their effects by identifying hazards, building safer
structures, and providing education on earthquake safety. By preparing for
natural earthquakes, we can also reduce the risk from human induced
earthquakes.
Forest Fires
What are forest fires?
A wildfire, bushfire, wildland fire or rural fire is an unplanned, unwanted,
uncontrolled fire in an area of combustible vegetation starting in rural areas
and urban areas.
What are the impacts of forest fires?
The forest fire can be deadly, destroying homes, wildlife habitat and trees,
and polluting the air with emissions harmful to human health. Fire also
releases carbon dioxide—a key greenhouse gas—into the atmosphere.
How to prevent forest fires?
1. Obey local laws regarding open fires, including campfires;
2. Keep all flammable objects away from fire;
3. Have firefighting tools nearby and handy;
4. Carefully dispose of hot charcoal;
5. Drown all fires;
6. Carefully extinguish smoking materials.
