HOW TO LEARN AND TRAIN MUAY THAI AT HOME

EFFECTIVELY

5 SPECIFIC STEPS TO GET STARTED AND TO CONTINUE TRAINING

FOR AS LONG AS YOU LIKE

This report is the result of my own efforts to learn and train muay thai from home without access
to live instruction or trainers in my country.

I have always loved martial arts and have trained in Judo and Gracie Jiu Jitsu since 2011.
Thankfully there are good Judo schools in my country and I was able to get regular training with
great instructors.

However after travelling to Thailand for work in 2013 I really became interested in learning more
about muay thai. But returning home to my own country I found there really was not any trainers
or instructors who could teach me.

It was at this time almost 7 years ago that I decided to commit to learning and training muay thai
even though I could not attend regular training at a gym or academy like I had done with Judo.

So what were the specific steps I needed to take in order to achieve my goal of learning muay
thai?

1# SEEK OUT INSTRUCTION ONLINE

Well I knew I had to find good teachers or trainers and learn from them.

Due to my geographical location, the only option was to pursue learning the basics of muay
thai through the internet.

I spent a lot of time looking at YouTube videos for free instruction and found a few great
YouTube Channels that I still am subscribed to and watch regularly today. These included:

- Sean Fagan AKA The Muay Thai Guy

- Precision Striking (more of a boxing focus but excellent online learning resource)
- Sylvie Von Douglas Ittu’s Channel (female US fighter living and fighting regularly in
Thailand)
- Expert Boxing - another boxing focussed channel with great instruction
- Bang Muay Thai
This lead me to begin learning muay thai though free online resources by respected channels
run by experienced trainers and fighters in striking whether it be muay thai, boxing, kickboxing
or MMA.

STEP #2 - SET UP YOUR DEDICATED TRAINING SPACE

Again not having access to a gym to train at, I had to find a place to actually train and review
lessons and practice techniques.

Thankfully there was a spare room at the bottom of my house that nobody used much and that I
had set up as basic home gym with an adjustable bench and barbell and dumbells sets.

Having a dedicated space to train would be best and this can even be out in your garage where
you can hang your heavy bag.

This leads to Step 3

STEP #3 - GET YOUR TRAINING EQUIPMENT SORTED

Heavy Bag and Gloves are really the only two pieces of equipment you need for solo training in
striking for muay thai kickboxing and MMA.

There are many resources available online also for making your own heavy bag that you could
use also.
But the heavy bag and gloves will be the most important tools in your home training and are
crucial to your training.

Check out a post I wrote below about the best heavy bag for beginners below:

Below is a link to a useful post for selecting muay thai gloves:

STEP #4 FOLLOW A STRUCTURED PROGRAM

It wasn't until I put in the time in training on a structured program beginning from stance and
footwork that my technique really improved.

Following a structured program will allow you to reap greater benefits from your solo training as
opposed to pulling snippets from different YouTube channels and not building your foundation
first.

You can take the time to research and design your own training program and I have a
comprehensive post on how to do this you can access at the link below:

In addition to designing your own training program, you can do what I did and spend a little
money and follow a paid structured program designed by pros and established trainers in
striking.

The main program I still subscribe to and follow to this day is Duane Ludwig’s ang Muay
Thai online resource.

You can read more about this great online learning resource and how much it costs at the link
below. This link will also provide my Top 5 REcommendations for learning muay thai online and
training at home.

These resources really are great and though they are not free they are invaluable for people in
my situation who cannot access live training and teachers and therefore get our main instruction
online.
STEP #5 TRAVEL AND VISIT GYMS AND ACADEMIES FOR LIVE
INSTRUCTION

Since 2013 I have had a few opportunities to travel to Thailand, Singapore, Korea and Australia
to learn and train with great teachers and martial artists such as Sam A Gaiyanghadao, Rener
Gracie (for Jiu Jitsu) my main teacher My Happy in Chiang Mai.

At the end of the day while you can learn a lot and improve a lot from home based solo training -
it is well worth the time, money and effort to meet up with and train with great teachers and
training partners.

This may require some travel and planning and budgeting but adding in this valuable aspect of
live training with great instructors at least once a year, your technique, skill and understanding
will continue to improve for as long as you keep up your training.
