University teaching experience includes courses in:

 Principles of Management - For undergraduates including sections of up to 1,000
students
 Strategic Management - For undergraduates including sections of up to 300
students
 Organization Theory - At the undergraduate level

I teach the Management Department’s introduction to management course (MGT 300)

here at ASU each semester. Each semester I typically have approximately 900
students in the three sections that I teach. This would suggest that I have taught nearly
50,000 students during my entire career given I taught large intro to management
courses at Virginia Tech during my time in Blacksburg). My teaching ratings have been
consistently high over my career at both Virginia Tech and ASU. During my ASU
employment, I have also led 15 honor’s college contracts for our undergraduates as well
as served as the thesis chair for three honor’s college students and served on the
doctoral committee of one student at ASU and five other students at universities across
the world (see vita for details).

During my academic career, I have received numerous teaching awards including the
international 2007 Business Week Favorite Professor Award. I was a semi-finalist
(placed in the top six of over 140 nominees) for the prestigious international Baylor
University Cherry Award for 2020 for outstanding teaching. During my tenure at Virginia
Tech, I was a ten-time recipient of the Virginia Tech “Students Choice Faculty Member
of the Year Award.” This award is based on votes by students. I was awarded the
William E. Wine Award at VT for Teaching Excellence in 2002. The Wine Award is
considered to be the most prestigious teaching award conferred by Virginia Tech.
During my 8.5 years here at ASU, I have been nominated for and received several

2
College and University-wide teaching awards as well. These nominations and awards
include:

*2020: John W. Teets Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award 2020 (voted

by students in W.P. Carey College of Business).

*2019-2020: Included on Dean's List for Teaching Impact (ASU, W.P Carey)

*2019: Finalist WPC Teets Undergraduate Teaching Award

*2017 Excellence in Teaching Award within the W.P. Carey Business School.

This award is awarded by the ASU chapter of the National Society of Leadership
and Success and is voted by the students.

*2013 Finalist WPC Teets Undergraduate Teaching Award.

*2012 ASU Professor of the Year Award, Order of Omega (ASU Greek Honor
Society; awarded each year to one Professor at ASU)

*2012: Nominated for ASU Parent’s Association ASU Professor of the Year
Award

*2011: Finalist WPC Teets Undergraduate Teaching Award

*2010: Nominated for Associated Students of ASU Centennial Professorship

Award

Further, as a teacher of very large sections, I am approached my numerous students for

job and career counseling. I can safely say, it is in the 100’s of students each year.
Finally, in terms of my “mentoring ability” regarding teaching, I have both formally and
informally mentored many graduate students and colleagues during the course of my
career in the process of teaching. Also, many students approach me to help them locate
internships and my connections to the business world have been helpful in this manner.

Also, I held the title of “University Master Teacher” at ASU from 2009 to 2015. As part
of my duties related to holding this position, I created a website in order to help other
faculty teach classes within classes with both small and large enrollments. Finally, as
my vita suggests, I have published 9 peer reviewed teaching related articles and given
four worldwide webinars on teaching effectiveness especially in large classroom
settings. These publications and presentations provide further support for my
international scholarly reputation.

Additionally, I was nominated for the 2006 SCHEV Award (for Outstanding Faculty
Members in all colleges and universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia). I was one of
three faculty members nominated by Virginia Tech. This award is based on excellence
in research, teaching, and service. I was honored as a finalist for this 2006 SCHEV
Outstanding Faculty Award. Of the 87 faculty members who were nominated by their
respective schools, I made the final round of 32 people (15 faculty were selected for the
award). I was also re-nominated for the 2007 SCHEV Award.
3
I was nominated by the Virginia Tech Provost (the only professor at Virginia Tech
nominated) for the 2008 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching.
I was also the recipient of the “2007 Business Week Favorite Professor Award”. I
am featured on www.businessweek.com as one of the approximately twenty
professors from across the world receiving this award. This was voted by the
students in a survey conducted by Business Week Online.

I received the Teaching Excellence Award given each year to one Management
Department Faculty member at Virginia Tech in 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2007. I was a
ten-time recipient of the Virginia Tech “Students’ Choice Faculty Member of the Year
Award” (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009). This award
is based on votes by students. I was selected as a finalist for the 1999 Diggs Teaching
Scholar Award (a university-wide teaching award at Virginia Tech selected by a panel of
faculty and one student member). Finally, I was awarded the 2004 Tri Delta
Distinguished Professor Award for teaching excellence at Virginia Tech.

My teaching has been featured in various media. For example, my end of the semester
“rap song” appeared in the online version of The Chronicle of Higher Education
(www.chronicle.com), on the Roanoke, Virginia affiliate of NBC News (WSLS TV), K92
Radio Station (FM) in Roanoke, Virginia, the Virginia Tech webpage, and the website
www.collegehumor.com. Also, my teaching was written up in ReadersDigest.com.

I have published numerous articles with doctoral students, served on graduate

committees, and three of my MBA graduate assistants over the past 10 years are
currently in and/or completed a doctoral program in Management.

During my time at Arizona State University during my doctoral program, The College of
Business at Arizona State University used an eight-item questionnaire for students to
assess teaching performance. The scale ranged from 1 (very good) to 5 (very poor).
My average rating across undergraduate classes was 1.02 (for normal section sizes-30
to 40 students) and 1.53 (for mega-sections-300 students). My average rating for
graduate classes was 1.0. Additionally, I had multiple semesters of perfect (1.0) ratings.
This average consistently placed me first among the highest teaching ratings of all
faculty in the Management Department. In addition, I received several teaching awards
at Arizona State University including the Teaching Excellence Award for the College of
Business (1991-1992) and the Outstanding Strategic Management Teacher (1990-
1991). My average ratings for the three courses that I taught at ASU West was 1.01
(same ratings scale as noted above for ASU).

Finally, I have served as an instructor for three “Experiential Learning Modules” for MBA
students at the University of Maryland at College Park (organized by Dr. Ed Locke and
Dr. Henry P. Sims, Jr.). In those sessions in which evaluations were completed (2 of 3
sessions), I received the highest evaluations (from students) among all the other
participating professors.
