Fredrick Douglas
Frederick Douglass has been called the father of the civil rights movement. He
rose through determination, brilliance, and eloquence to shape the American
nation. He was an abolitionist, human rights and women's rights activist, orator,
author, journalist, publisher, and social reformer.
Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou, Legendary Poet and Civil Rights Activist Who Had Disability,
Inspires Generations. Maya Angelou was an award-winning author, poet, civil
rights activist, college professor and screenwriter. Most recognized for her
literary works, Angelou was and remains among the most influential woman of
her time.
Malcolm X
Malcolm X was an African American leader in the civil rights movement, minister
and supporter of black nationalism. He urged his fellow black Americans to
protect themselves against white aggression “by any means necessary,” a stance
that often put him at odds with the nonviolent teachings of Martin Luther King,
Jr.
A Sad Day in Black History
M.L.K pursued direct engagement with the political system. His death led to anger
and disillusionment, and feelings that now only violent resistance to white racism
could be effective. The rioters were mostly black; not all were poor.
A Monumental Day in Black History
Due to Union measures such as the Confiscation Acts and Emancipation
Proclamation in 1863, the war effectively ended slavery, even before ratification
of the Thirteenth Amendment, which in December 1865 formally ended the legal
institution throughout the country.
Coretta & Martin Luther King
Following her husband's assassination in 1968, Coretta founded the Martin
Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and later successfully lobbied
for his birthday to recognized as a federal holiday. She died of complications from
ovarian cancer in 2006, at age 78.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey will tell all in The Life You Want, her long-awaited memoir set to be
published in January 2017 via Flatiron Books. Last year, she published a collection
of her columns from O in a book titled What I Know for Sure through Flatiron

Barack Obama
Barack Hussein Obama II is an American attorney and politician who served as
the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the
Democratic Party, he was the first African-American president of the United
States.
The Roots
The Roots are known for a jazzy and eclectic approach to hip-hop featuring live
musical instruments and the group's work has consistently been met with critical
acclaim. ThoughtCo ranked the band #7 on its list of the 25 Best Hip-Hop Groups of
All-Time, calling them "Hip-hop's first legitimate band.
Fat Albert
Hey, hey, hey! A group of urban adolescents learns a series of valuable life lessons
while hanging out in their Philadelphia neighborhood.Members of the group
include Fat Albert, Mushmouth, Dumb Donald and Weird Harold.
Mo’Nique
Monique Angela Hicks, known professionally as Mo'Nique, is an American
comedian and actress. She first gained fame as a member of The Queens of
Comedy, as well as her role as Nicole "Nikki" Parker in the “The Parkers”.
The Divine Nine
The network, unofficially known as the Divine Nine, includes five fraternities:
Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi
Theta. ... Although they began as organizations for black students, today's
sororities and fraternities in the Divine Network welcome all ethnicities.
Madea goes to Jail
Madea Goes to Jail is a 2009 American comedy-drama film written and directed
by Tyler Perry, which was based on his 2006 play. The play and the film deal with
Perry's signature character Madea going to prison for her uncontrollable anger
management problems.
Tiffany Haddish
Tiffany Sarac Haddish is an American actress, comedian, and author. After
guest-starring on several television series, Haddish gained prominence with her
role as Nekeisha Williams on the NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show.
Tyler Perry
Tyler Perry is the president and founder of The Tyler Perry Company Inc., (Tyler
Perry Studios). He is best known as a writer, director and actor in films, television
and theatre. In 2010, the New Yorker described Perry (subscription required) as
"the most financially successful black person the American film industry has ever
known."
Spelman College
Spelman College, a historically Black college and a global leader in the education
of women of African descent, is dedicated to academic excellence in the liberal
arts and sciences and the intellectual, creative, ethical, and leadership
development of its students.
The Traffic Light
In 1923, Garrett Morgan patented an electric automatic traffic signal. Morgan
was the first African-American to own a car in Cleveland. He also invented the
gas mask. Morgan's design used a T-shaped pole unit with three positions.
Soul Food
Soul food is a variety of cuisine originating in the Southeastern United States, and
from the conditions endured by enslaved West Africans in this region.
Black Art
The Black Arts Movement was an African American-led art movement, active
during the 1960s and 1970s. Through activism and art, BAM created new cultural
institutions and conveyed a message of black pride.
Black History Fact
Claudette Colvin. Claudette Colvin (born September 5, 1939) is a retired American
nurse aide who was a pioneer of the 1950s civil rights movement. On March 2,
1955, she was arrested at the age of 15 in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to
give up her seat to a white woman on a crowded, segregated bus.She got off the
bus before Rosa Parks.
African Proverbs

groups has its own set of traditional sayings. Some are comical, some are cryptic, but all of them offer

NAACP
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a civil rights
organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as a biracial endeavor to
advance justice for African Americans by a group including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary
White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells.
Patrice Lovely
Patrice Lovely. Patrice Lovely (born January 4, 1968) is an American actress, and
comedian. She is best known for her role as Hattie Mae Love in the sitcom Love
Thy Neighbor and the comedy films Boo!

M.L.K “I Have A Dream” speech
The I Have A Dream speech was important in several ways: It brought even
greater attention to the Civil Rights Movement, which had been going on for many
years. ... After this speech, the name Martin Luther King was known to many more
people than before. It made Congress move faster in passing the Civil Rights Act.
Vaccines were introduced by a Slave

the skin of an uninfected person, you could deliberately introduced smallpox to
the healthy individual making them immune.
