LESSON PLAN
Name of lesson: Time & Money

2rd grade

Suggested group size: Instructions given as a whole group and then split into small groups

Standard: Work with time and money.

Tell and write from analog and digital clock to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢
symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you
have? (2.MD)

Objective: The student will understand how to maneuver their money and tell the different value
between dollars, and cents and in doing so they will also be reviewing their timing skills and how
to tell it.

Materials:

- A Booklet: Inside the booklet has the values of each dollars & cents *Little cheat-sheet
- Bight green play money (make known to the class that it is fake money and explain
the difference)
- Analog clock
- Markers
- Worksheet (with instructions, activity, and role)
- Objects around the classroom
- Plastic Basket w/ handles “grocery basket”
Procedures:

Begin with introduction the background of money, and the importance of currency. (slide show
will be provided) Lead lesson into how money is used today and what it can be helpful with and
what money should not look like and the consequences of counterfeit money. Interact with
students and ask them questions and test their knowledge on money and review their knowledge
on time.

Questions to ask… What have you used money for? How much money do you think it would be
to buy a coloring book at your local store? What is more valuable a 10-dollar bill or 25 cents?

Attracted to these instructions are worksheets. In the worksheets there is a list of materials one
can find in the classroom, but it will need some thought put in. They will make your brain work
to find the items, in other words, it’s a scavenger hunt. (Along with the work sheet there are
small analog clocks, that go with the activity) You will split into groups of threes, and in each
group, there will be different jobs assigned. (Students can arrange who gets what job in their
group but as a team they must come into an agreement) each student has their own worksheet
and analog clock. The jobs would be a banker, Costumer, Salesperson.

Tell the definitions to students //

BANK – A business where people deposit (sum of money placed or kept in a bank account) and
withdraw (Remove) their money and borrow money.

BANKER- Person who works at the bank. They accept deposits, lend money, and investments of
money.

The banker’s job is to keep track of the money and how much money is being spent and note it
down in their spreadsheet on the worksheet along with the time on the analog clock with each
purchase.

The salespersons job is to negotiate the prices on the materials and kept track on what they sale
and what time they sell the items (if they don’t sell the item thet must write down a 0 on the item
quantity line). You must also count the money, and make sure the money amount is correct. The
salesperson also must keep track of time because they don’t want to work past store hours.

The costumer’s job would be to scavenger for the materials listed on the worksheet and write
down in the designated area on the worksheet. Before going on your adventure to find the items
turn to the banker and confirm the amount you have in your “bank”. When confirmed pursue
your quest in finding the items. You can try and negotiate the price of the items, and but you
must buy the items listed in the list in the worksheet. You must also keep track of the time
because it might be important later.
*(When confirming the amount with the banker (individually) make sure to double check the
amount because there might be a misunderstanding and you don’t want to overspend money not
in the bank. This step is extremely important due to miscounting dollar bills which leads to
misdoing the assignment.)

(Inform students that if confused about cents or dollars, there is a cheat sheet on the worksheet,
and double check. If still unsure, ask another team who has the same job as you and discuss with
one another. IF that still does not work out discuss with the teacher.)

Make sure students acknowledge that asking questions is okay!!

*During the assignments all students must participate and interact.

In the end of the scavenger the required items must have been bought and the time must be told
exactly how asked in the instructions (if students are able to negotiate with the salesperson and
have left over money then they are more than welcomed to purchase other items that are labeled)
but adding up the price of the items and the negotiated price (if you were able to negotiate) and
in the end total box write down how much was spent... When students are done with their
worksheet they can discuss with other teams and compare data and test each other knowledge
with money.

Once again, this main point of this is money and being able to work with money and learning the
value of it. (Difference between Cents & Dollars, being able to add total of money), a bonus
lesson is the telling time and keeping track of it (In other words a review for telling time on an
analog clock)

Assessment: Formative Learning Assessment.

Progress in grading - things that are main things to look out for when grading would be the
Participation, Teamwork, Learning Progress, and Effort, (as long as the student is putting effort
in the progress of understanding money, and telling time.)

Keep worksheet and we will continue this next class leading into another assignment.
