"Stimulating the Immune System Through Complementary Therapies-

Based Nursing Practice in the New Normal Era"

A. Background
Health is a physical, mental, and social well-being not just an illness or
weakness (WHO, in Widiastuti, 2017). Health in the covid-19 pandemic not only
affected physical health but also mental health since this pandemic infection is
remain to increase. Total covid-19 case in the worldwide on June 22, 2020 has
reached 9,035,375 (9.03 million) cases. In Indonesia covid-19 reached 46,845
confirmed cases, with 2500 death cases, 18,375 cases had been cured and cases in
treatment reached 25,610 cases (Mukaromah, Vina in Worldometers, 2020).
The situation in this pandemic got a global attention. Indonesian
government took some quick actions in handling covid-19 when it reached
Indonesia in March with 2 patients confirmed positive covid-19. The government
has established health protocols such as social and physical distancing, announced
to the community about the use of mask in the public area, hand washing habits,
temporarily closing the schools, offices, and restricted religious activities in the
worship place and applying large-scale social restrictions particularly in the
highest prevalence areas of Covid-19 in Indonesia. Unluckily, covid-19 cases tend
to increase because most Indonesians do not fully comply with the health protocol.
Indonesian people have begun to physical, mental, economic and social
problems. The basic problem was faced by the people of Indonesia is
psychological problems caused self quarantine which has been passed for ± 3
months. According to Hakim (2020) psychological triggers in the community
because of fear of being infected with a virus, lack of basic needs, guidance to
adjust behavior, and prohibition of gathering (ABC, Australia, 2020). It was
confirmed that 20-26% of people have an experience of acute stress such as
insomnia, irritability, and tension. These problems were influence on the decline
of the immune system.

The principal recommendation for Indonesian people in the pandemic of

Covid-19 is health maintenance including improve the immune system and
eradication or recovery efforts to get a better quality of life. The people need to
adapt to the new habits in the platform of the new normal era and strengthen the
health protocols to prevent Covid-19 transmission.
Complementary therapy is one of the efforts to enhance immunity, nurses
can provide complementary therapy for non-conventional therapy (non-medical
therapy) in the medical world that relies on chemical drugs and operations by
health workers. Complementary therapy is an adjunct therapy along with primary
therapy and it has functions as a supportive therapy to control symptoms, improve
quality of life, and contribute to overall patient management. Complementary
therapies have invasive and non-invasive procedures. Examples of invasive
complementary therapies are acupuncture and cupping (wet cupping) that use
needles in their treatment. While non-invasive types such as energy therapy (reiki,
qigong, tai chi, prana, sound therapy), biological therapy (herbal, nutritional
therapy, food combining, juice therapy, urine therapy, colon hydrotherapy and
tactile therapy modalities; acupressure, baby massage, reflection, reiki, rolfing,
and other therapies (Hitchcock et al., in Widyatuti, 2008). Complementary therapy
can be used as an opportunity for nurses as entrepreneurs in independent nursing
practice. There are nurses who want to have an entrepreneurial spirit, they are
expected to create a different image in the health profession. Entrepreneurship will
increase the positive image and bargaining power for nurses, therefore nurses must
be motivated to become entrepreneur. Based on the background mentioned above,
the Faculty of Health Sciences University of Muhammadiyah Jember will held an
International e-Seminar/Webinar with the theme "Stimulating the Immune System
Through Complementary Therapies-Based Nursing Practice in the New Normal
Era".
