Achieving
Equity in Asian American Healthcare: Critical Issues and Solutions. Journal of Asian
Health, 1(1).

Within the healthcare system everyone should be striving to achieve equity, there have
been too many disparities throughout the ethnic minorities, especially in the Asian
American population. Jed Obra, BS in neurobiology, physiology and behavior from UC
Davis discusses the healthcare system for Asian Americans. There is a huge lack in
representation of Asian minorities in clinical research trials. Unfortunately, the National
Institutes of Health only allocates less than 1% of their funding towards healthcare for
Asian Americans. The intended audience is researchers in the healthcare field, urging
them to better represent the Asian American population within their studies. Inaccurate
research can be severely detrimental for minorities causing disproportionate healthcare
and underrepresentation leading to decreased funds. This article is targeted towards
scientists who conduct research, and government officials who oversee ethnic minority
representation and funding programs. Similarly, to Lai’s 2016 study on the lack of Latino
health funding, Asian Americans also suffer similar underfunding and representation.

US Ethnic Representation in Clinical Trials

Figure 2. This figure shows the percentage of representation of the different ethnic
groups in the United States. There is an emphasis on the under representation of each
ethnic minority as compared to the Caucasian majority. With little representation in
clinical trials this leads to gaps in research and treatment. Obra, J., Lin, B., Đoàn, L. N.,
