Reasons:
Efficacy: Silica gel is widely understood to be largely ineffective as
moisture/mould management products. This is because it fully
saturates in humid factory conditions before shipping, and doesn’t
inherently inhibit the grown of bacteria. The most effective examples
have been associated with high levels of toxic additives.
Toxicity:
Additives such as Dimethylfumarate (DMF) and Cobalt Dichloride
(CoCl2) are banned biocides, toxic for human ingestion and are known
to cause skin irritation on contact. A number of recent RAPEX product
recalls across the EU have been attributed to skin irritation from textile
and leather furniture contaminated with DMF from the Silica Gel packs
included in manufacture & shipping. Desiccants pose an even greater
risk in children’s products where they could easily be ingested.
