The movie I’ve watched was entitled “Burnt”. The movie is about Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper)
was a renowned two-star Michelin chef in Paris until a breakdown caused by drugs and alcohol that put
his career on hold. After moving to London from New Orleans, Adam want to redeem himself and is
given a second chance when his former maitre d' (Daniel Brühl) grudgingly appoints him as the head chef
of his fine-dining restaurant. The acerbic and volatile Adam Jones gets a second chance to obtain a third
Michelin star by demanding perfection from his freshly formed crew (Sienna Miller, Omar Sy). I like this
movie and I chose this over other movies because, personally, I like watching people cook especially
unique and look so palatable. As a person who wants to try new food, watching cooking show or movie is
what I want to do on my free time.
The very first concept of Operations Management that I’ve relate to the movie “Burnt” is the
forecasting concept in operations management. I can relate forecasting to the movie in a way that it is the
word that came to my mind during the scene where Adam Jones and his menu was again introduced to the
people when he became the new head chef of the fine-dining restaurant of his former maitre d’ but there
were only a few people attend to the grand opening of restaurant. They expected more or Adam expected
more customers going to the restaurant to eat but got disappointed when only few customers came. If only
they have a forecast before launching their very first operation in the restaurant, they would not have got
disappointed. But at least, on their next operations they already have all their customers satisfied and meet
their demand.
Another concept is the operation management itself for all we know, operations management is
the set of activities that transform inputs to outputs by creating value in the form of goods and services. In
the case of the movie, they transform their inputs like fish and other ingredients into something good and
delicious dishes which in turn create the value of the goods that they’re selling and that is their menu.
Based on the lesson, operations management is more than what we have defined previously. It also
includes organizing work, selecting methods, arranging layouts, and measuring performance. Just like
what I’ve seen in the movie, they also did some of that like before Adam Jones start operating in the new
restaurant, he first organized his crew, the work of each crew, the methods to complete each menu, and
everything that needs to be done which is needed to manage their operations successfully.
The last concept but not the least is benchmarking which is a process of measuring a company’s
success by comparing their company to their competitors in the same industry for them to know what to
improve. As I’ve watched the movie I’ve watched, I’ve instantly thought about benchmarking in the part
where Jones went to his former colleague and became his competitors to taste their food and observe their
methods for him to see what he needs to be done during his restaurant operation. He also visited other
restaurant and food businesses near the area to compare for him to see and know what to improve.
Benchmarking is what Adam Jones did first before starting the operation because he’s still trying to
perfect his menu and have a better-quality dish so when he took over the restaurant, he will have more
advantage with his competitors.
Operations management and its different concept is applicable and relatable in almost everything
in our everyday life from the food we eat to the things we’re doing and using. Learning and understanding
operations management is important in our life of value.
