• boiling point of about 470°F
• Dangerous, fatal if swallowed

What are the characteristics of brake fluid?

One of the important characteristics of brake fluid is its boiling

point. Hydraulic systems rely on an incompressible fluid to
transmit force. Liquids are generally incompressible while gases
are compressible. If the brake fluid boils (becomes a gas), it will
lose most of its ability to transmit force.

How does brake fluid affect the environment?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, that is, it absorbs moisture. Do not

keep a large stock of brake fluid on hand. Maintain an inventory
only large enough to do the work at hand. If brake fluid is
allowed to absorb moisture, it must not be used and is therefore
wasted.

What does brake fluid do to skin?

Skin Contact: May cause irritation. Brake fluid may be slowly

absorbed through the skin. Excessive exposure for extended
periods of time involving large areas of skin would be necessary
for the absorption of harmful amounts. Ingestion: Kidney
damage and hepatotoxicity may occur if substantial amounts are
ingested.

What does brake fluid leak look like?

When your vehicle leaks brake fluid, it typically leaves a trail

that can range from a light, yellowish hue to a dark brown that
resembles motor oil. If you suspect your vehicle is leaking,
check on the ground under the vehicle, around the master
cylinder, on the brake lines, on the rotors and on the drums.

Is brake fluid corrosive to rubber?

No. But if the brake fluid is contaminated, it can cause corrosion

to metal. That means to say that it can damage the break
caliper or wheel cylinder and can also cause leak.

Where does brake fluid usually leak from?

There could be one in the brake master cylinder, the front brake
caliper, the brake line, or the rear brake caliper.

What Are the Signs My Brake Fluid Is Contaminated?

• Your brake pedal responds more slowly.

• You need to start braking earlier than you used to.
• Your dashboard has a brake warning light (Brake or ABS)
• Your brake pedal requires excessive pressure to respond.

Is brake fluid a good lubricant?

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid that is used in brake

systems to aid in the movement of the brake pedal to actuate
the brake pads at the wheels—thus stopping your vehicle. Brake
fluid is also a lubricant and anticorrosion fluid that helps to
make sure that your vehicles brake system works optimally.

What happens if you don’t change brake fluid?

If you don't have your Brake Fluid changed as recommended by

your vehicle manufacturer this will lead to Moisture
Contamination in your brake reservoir where the Brake Fluid is
stored. As your brake fluid ages, it's also bound to be
contaminated with 'Debris Buildup'.
