1. For the following data set, find the a) median, b)

mean, c) sum of squared deviations d) variance, and
e) standard deviation:

1.39, 1.76, 1.90, 2.12, 2.71, 2.53, 3.00, 3.33, 3.71, 4.00

2. Make up three sets of scores: (a) one with the mean

greater than the median, (b) one with the median and
the mean the same, and (c) one with the mode greater
than the median. (Each made-up set of scores should
include at least 7 scores).

3. A study involves measuring the children’s scores on

social understanding task. As part of the results, the
researcher reports, “ The composite score for 5-9 year
olds (M= 4.33; SD = 2.05), showed linear increase
with age. Explain what is written in parentheses to a
person who has never had a course in statistics.
