Booklet:

Kinematic equations Vector components

𝑣 2 = 𝑣𝑥 2 + 𝑣𝑦 2

𝑣𝑥 = 𝑣 ∙ cos (𝜃)

𝑣𝑦 = 𝑣 ∙ sin (𝜃)

Dynamics:
Use g = 10 m/s2 as the gravitational acceleration for all problems.
Draw a complete free-body diagram for all problems

1) A piano was raised vertically by a cable from a 10-story building. When the
piano was stationary, the tension in the cable was 1800 N.
(a) What is the tension in the cable when the piano was being raised with
an acceleration of 1 m/s2? [4]
(b) What is the tension in the cable when the piano was slowing down at a
rate of 0.5 m/s2? [3]

2) A 80 kg person stands on a bathroom scale in a motionless elevator.

When the elevator started moving downward, it took 5 s to reach a crusing
speed of 10 m/s.
(a) Calculate the reading of the scale when the elevator is acceleration
downward. [5]
(b) When the elevator reaches its cruising speed (i.e, it moves at
constant speed), what will be the reading of the scale? Justify. [2]

3) A box of 10 kg is given a push so that it slides across a wooden floor. How far
will it go, given that the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.35 and the push imparts
an initial speed of 15 m/s? [7]

4) A spring stretches 7.5 cm when a 1.5 kg block is hung from it.

(a) Calculate the spring constant. [4]
(b) If a 2.5 kg block replaces the 1.5 kg block, how far does the spring
stretch?[3]
5) A little boy that weighs 45 kg slides down a 10 m long plastic slide with soap at
an angle of 12.0°. Assuming that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the boy
and the surface of the slide is μk = 0.060 and that the boy starts from rest,
determine the acceleration of the boy. [7]

Optional challenge (extra points):

6) A 31 kg girl goes down a straight slide inclined 38° above horizontal. The child
is acted on by her weight, the normal force from the slide, kinetic friction (μk =
0.060), and a horizontal rope exerting a 30 N force as shown in the figure.

(a) What is the magnitude of the normal force that the slide exerts on the girl? [2]

(b) What is the magnitude of the friction force? [3]

(c) Will the girl slide? If the answer is yes, what is her acceleration? [3]

Good luck!
