1. Total population equivalent (PE)

3167 + 1119 + 498 = 4784
4784 × 1.0 = 4784

2. Determine the class of treatment plant based on the number of PE

~ Class 2 (PE 1001 ~ 5000)

3. Average daily flow

Q avg = 225 litres/ capita/day (lpcd)
= 0.225 × 4784
= 1076.4 𝑚3 /𝑑𝑎𝑦

4. Peak flow factor

= 4.7𝑝−0.11
= 4.7 × (4784/1000)−0.11
= 3.96

5. Peak flow
Q peak = Peaking × Q avg
= 3.96 × 1076.4 𝑚3 /𝑑𝑎𝑦
= 4262.5 ≈ 0.049 𝑚3 /𝑑𝑎𝑦

7. Design a screen chamber to treat a maximum flow of 0.049 𝑚3 of domestic wastewater

in each channel from the approach channel. Given the width = 0.8 m and depth = 0.4
m. It is also assumed that the screening production is 0.0015 𝑚3 /ML of flow.
Compute velocity, va
Va = Q max / Ax
= 0.049/ (0.8 × 0.4)
= 0.153 𝑚/𝑠

Numbers of Bars Provide bars of 10 mm wide with a clear opening of 25 mm. Let n
number of bars, then opening (n + 1) + size of bars (n) = B (total width)

0.025 (n + 1) + 0.01 n = 0.8

n = 22.14 ≈ 22 bars

Check: The total width of the screen chamber, B = 0.8 m

If n =22 bars: 0.025(22 + 1) + 0.01(22) = 0.795 m (accepted)

If n =23 bars: 0.025(23 + 1) + 0.01(23) = 0.83 m (exceeded the total width)

Hence, the provided 16 bars for the chamber width of 0.8 m is acceptable

iii) Velocity through Screen Bars

The effective width of channel, 𝐵𝑒

𝐵𝑒 = total width - width of 22 bars

𝐵𝑒 = 0.8 – (0.01 x 22) = 0.38 and side water depth, D = 0.58 m

Therefore, the effective cross-sectional area of the screen is 𝐴𝑥 = 𝐵𝑒 × D

Then, the velocity of flow through screen bars, 𝑣𝑏 is given by

0.049
𝑣𝑏 = 0.58 𝑥 0.4 = 0.21 𝑚/𝑠

Compute head loss

0.212 − 0.1532
ℎ𝐿 = 1
2(9.81)𝑥 (0.7)
= 0.002 m

- Quantity of Screening

Produced Assumed the screening production of 0.0015 𝑚3 / ML of flow.

Quantity of screening produced = 0.0015 𝑚3 /ML x (0.05 𝑚3 /s x 86400 s/1d x 1000

L/1𝑚3 )

= 0.0015 𝑚3 /ML x 4.32 ML/d

= 0.0065 𝑚3 /d = 6.5 L/d

- Capacity of Screening Produced

Provided the length of the plate = width of the chamber = 0.8 m, width of the plate is
half of its length, and the depth of the pocket equal to 0.15 m for collecting screenings,
the capacity of the screening pocket, Cs

Cs = L x B x D = 0.8 m x 0.4 m x 0.15 m = 0.048

- Inclined length of bars

0.7
Inclined length of bars, sin 45 = 1 m

Length of bar screen chamber (inlet and outlet zone)

Horizontal projected length = 1 x cos 45 = 0.7 m

Length of the inlet zone = 0.8 + 0.2 = 1.0 m

Length of the outlet zone = 0.4 + 0.2 = 0.6 m

Total length of screen channel = 1.0 + 0.6 + 0.7 = 2.3 m
