of London. It has connections all through the country and the

rest of Europe. High speed train Eurostar goes from London to

the north of France and then to Spain and Germany. It has

the speed of 300km per hour. The new station opened in 2007

and it has 50 million passengers a year. It first opened in

Victorian times, in the nineteenth century after five years of

building. It was a masterpiece designed by W.H. Barlow made

of iron and glass with a vast crystal palace and a 240 feet

wide roof. The new, modern St Pancras was restored through 3

decades of the 21st century and it cost 8 million pounds. In

the basement there is a check-in area and department lounge.

Escalators lead to the platforms above. The glass roof has been

restored and extended. Inside there are also bars, a boutiques,

restaurants, cafes and a farmer's market. In front of the

station there is a large gothic building- the Midland Grand

Hotel. When it opened, it was one of the most advanced hotels

in the world with a lift, 300 rooms, but just 9 bathrooms. It

closed down but then reopened as St Pancras Chambers. Now

it is a luxury, five-star hotel with 245 rooms. A lot of people

meet there in front of a 9-metre tall bronze statue of two

people hugging each other. called the Meeting.
