Jupiter: Lord of Heavens
Jupiter: Lord of Heavens
The Romans named this planet after their king of gods, Jupiter, who was also the
god of sky and thunder. Truly a giant among planets, Jupiter has a mass two and a half
times greater than the combined mass of all the remaining planets, satellites, and
asteroids. In fact, had Jupiter been about 10 times larger, it would have evolved into a
small star. Despite its great size, however, it is only 1/800 as massive as the Sun.
Jupiter revolves around the Sun once every 12 Earth-years, and rotates more
rapidly than any other planet, completing one rotation in slightly less than 10 hours.
For example, Ganymede has a dynamic core that generates a strong magnetic field
not observed on other satellites.
The innermost of the Galilean moons, Io, is perhaps the most volcanically active
body in our solar system. In all, more than 80 active sulfurous volcanic centers
have been discovered. Umbrella-shaped plumes have been observed rising from
the surface of Io to heights approaching 200 km.
The best prospects of finding liquid water within our solar system besides the Earth
lie beneath the icy surfaces of some of Jupiter’s moons, Europa. It is suspected to
have an ocean of liquid water hidden under its outer covering of ice. This suggests
that under its icy shell, Europa must have a warm, mobile interior and perhaps an
ocean.
Jupiter is the first planet formed in the Solar System. It works as its “vacuum
cleaner”.
Jupiter has more than 79 moons discovered so far. The main ones known as
the Galilean Satellites which were discovered by Galileo in 1610 are Io,
Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Io (the multicolor moon) has 400 active
volcanoes. Europa (frozen world) has the presence of liquid water oceans.
The presence of life might be possible. Callisto has the most impact craters
in the Solar System. Ganymede is the largest moon of Jupiter and the entire
Solar System. It is larger than Mercury.
Jupiter is a gas planet. Its clouds form a thin layer of only 50 km thick.
Below them, there is practically only hydrogen (81%) and helium (17%),
although there is also water (0.1%).
The Great Red Spot is a storm.
Jupiter takes 12 Earth-years to orbit the Sun. It rotates faster than any other
planet in the Solar System. A day on Jupiter lasts only 9 hours and 55
minutes.
Jupiter has rings, 4 around its equator.
The volume of Jupiter is equivalent to 1,317 Earths. Its weight is only 318
times higher.
The only probe that has traversed Jupiter’s atmosphere was Galileo. It took
6 years to arrive and it only survived 59 minutes.
For its size, it is believed that Jupiter is a failed star. Its composition is similar
to the composition of stars. If it had been 80 times larger, it would have
become a star.
